….But No Assurance On Locked Up Funds
By Patrick Biddah
President Akufo Addo, has finally broken his deliberate silence over the Menzgold saga since the issue of the locked up investment of customers broke out.
The broken silence will do little to the aggrieved customers since there seem to have been no hope as to the whereabouts of their locked up investment.
Touching on the issue for the first time at the 2019 State of The Nation Address (SONA) in accordance with the Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution, President Akufo Addo, said people should rather take a cue from the Menzgold debacle by being cautious.
His comment, surprisingly did not mention steps that his administration may take to recover the monies of investors.
All this while, the aggrieved customers have been calling on the President to make a statement on the saga
For some of the customers, the fact that the Director of the Menzgold Dealership company, Nana Appiah Mensah was seen in a photograph with the President settled the credibility and genuineness of Nana Appiah Mensah and his business activities.
In the early part of this year, the government announced a planned trip to the United Arab Emirates where Nana Appiah Mensah is said to have been arrested over his dealings.
The trip according to government , was to help in bringing back Nana Appiah Mensah to come face charges over his business activities and who was also said to be facing criminal charges in the UAE.
But as it turned out, the proposed date which was said to be February 2 ,this year fell on a Saturday which was a non sitting court day in the United Arab Emirates.
The Menzgold customers have not relented on their fight for recovering their locked up funds.
Some of them have argued that everything was well until the Secretary and Exchange Commission got involved in the activities of Menzgold becoming the start of their problems.
They have demonstrated across the country to drive home the need for government to step in recovering their funds. The last demonstration being in Tarkwa last week.
The President’s address did not just touch on warning other unsuspecting customers from investing in unregulated businesses that are taking deposits from people ,but also sought to give the assurance that those whose negligence led to the locked up capital will be death with.
But speaking with The Herald on what they make of what the President said on the menzgold issue, they said the President only said the obvious.
The customers who chose to remain anonymous accused the President of shielding Nana Appiah Mensah and that he should have given words of what his government can do to recover their locked up funds.
