The People’s National Convention (PNC) has expressed shock at the news of the passing of the former National Chairman of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey.
According to a statement, signed by the party’s General Secretary Atik Mohammed, the entire country, has lost a great and illustrious statesman.
“We want to express our sincere condolences, to the family, the New Patriotic Party and all Ghanaians for this loss. We pray that, his gentle soul finds peace in the bosom of Almighty Allah”, the statement added.
The former NPP National Chairman, died at the age of 70.
Jake, as he was affectionately called, is reported to have died early Sunday March 22, morning in London, where he was receiving treatment fora Leukemia ailment, he had been battling for some time.
Jake held several Ministerial positions under ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor administration, including Minister of Information, Minister of Tourism and Modernization of the Capital, as well as Chief of Staff in the early days of the administration.
He was the National Campaign Manager of the victorious NPP during the 2000 Presidential elections.
Until his death, maintained a quiet life after losing the NPP chairman slot he won in 2010 to now suspended NPP National Chairman, Paul Afoko.
During the contest for the chairmanship slot in Tamale, Mr. Afoko, polled 2,032, while Jake only managed 66 votes in the 2014 race.
The celebrated media practitioner and manager was also a past President of the Advertising Association of Ghana, and had several publications to his credit.
The PNC said “as we may well know, the contributions of Mr. Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey to the deepening of our Fourth Republican democracy cannot be understated”.
The statement recounts how he (Jake) fought together in the collective desire to make democracy better and stronger, adding this tragedy has also dealt a big blow to the country’s efforts at consolidating democracy.
“We also wish to use this occasion to urge all Ghanaians that, even in mourning, tobe inspired by the works and contributions of this statesman and compatriot to continue the struggle for the consolidation of our democracy, peace and stability especially in this election year”, the PNC statement concluded.
