I now understand the reason why the dog follows the man with a bloated stomach. It’s because one thing is sure to happen to him: he will either poop or vomit the contents of his stomach.
This saying was what came into mind, when I saw party executives from ward, Constituency and regional, as well as Members of Parliament (MP), who know the party rules that they were not supposed to endorse any flagbearer hopeful at the campaign launch of the twice defeated New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
No man of God or soothsayer can convince me that Nana Addo will not win the flagbearership race of the NPP for the third time. The question that I have asked my friends in the NPP are that, what is left of the man to be marketed to Ghanaians that they do not know already, he is a damaged goods and has outrun his shelve life.
Their argument has been that nobody has won elections in Ghana since 1992, when we ushered in the new dispensation at the first attempt. If this is what his teeming supporters, including Members of Parliament (MPs), are banging their hopes on, then I am sorry, I have a newsflash for them.
Our motto is forward ever, backwards never, so yes it is true that our former and late leader, John Evans Atta Mills, who was a contemporary to Nana Addo, won the 2008 election, after the third attempt, but President John Dramani Mahama, has broken that record and has set a new one.
His record is so impressive that he took less than three months to win a landslide against the supposed tried and tested Nana Addo, so I and Ghanaians want to hear something new, something refreshing, something reassuring, because the problems confronting this nation must cannot be solved on how many times, one has contested elections in this country.
Nana Addo cannot also do away with his acerbic tongue anytime he gets the opportunity to talk to his supporters. His cry that the reason for his 2008 and 2012 defeats, was because of a bloated register is becoming like a nightmare or paranoia.
His tongue lashing of the Electoral Commission (EC) recently, when he met party faithful in the United Kingdom (UK), is a symptomatic of an overzealous and selfish leader, who is on an ego trip to satisfy a lifelong dream.
How do you describe people who work at an institution that you want them to declare you winner of election one day?
Assuming without admitting that the register is bloated, is that not the same register that ensured that Ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor, won the 2000 and 2004 elections, and that enabled Nana Addo to become a Attorney- General and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
I do not envy the job of Dr. Afari Djan at all, the man has been thrown under the bus many times, by all the political parties in the country, and I wonder what steel he is made of. I am yet to see anybody who loves his country more than Dr. Afari Djan, despite all the accusations, he is still at post.
Nana Addo, feels that he has sacrificed so much for the country so he deserve an reward, and his claim to the reward is that at all cost, he must be made the President of the country, I am wondering what reward we have for Dr. Afari Djan?
When John Kufuor, decided to decorate some Ghanaians for their service to the nation, Nana Addo got the award, but Dr. Afari Djan, who has been insulted, vilified, more than any Ghanaian was not recognized for his contribution to the advancement and sustenance of democracy, I was not in the least surprised as that is how our heroes are treated.
All the so-called big men, who find time to be with Nana Addo, at his campaign launch knew that the NPP has made it explicitly clear that MPs and party executives, must not declare support for any candidate, yet for selfish reasons, they threw caution to the wind and went to throw their support behind the twice defeated candidate.
For them, Nana Addo is the favorite to deliver them victory in 2016, and thus will have the spoils of power to share, so better to associate with him, so that when the time comes their efforts, will be rewarded with appointments.
That’s all this open support and blatant disregard for laid down procedures are about. I cannot be deceived otherwise.
I have stated in many of my articles that the NPP has become fixated with Nana Addo, to the extent that nothing or no name makes sense to them, except that of Nana Addo, whether for good or bad.
Ghanaians spoke with their thumbs in 2008 and again in 2012, have made it unequivocally clear that among the 25 million Ghanaians, Nana Addo is not the man they want for their leader.
The only people who see him as their god and will stop at nothing to defend him are the blind follows of the NPP, who have demonstrated throughout history that they do not have the knack for selecting good leaders.
All the leaders they have selected since this country got independence have been people who think they have the right to lead this country, any other person is seen as not been a true blooded Ghanaian, and so they have always made the country ungovernable for persons who beat them.
President, John Dramani Mahama, has not been given a breathing space to rule since he took the oath of office in January 2013, all that the NPP has done is to ensure that he does not succeed, every possible dirt has been thrown at him, including the eight months long Election Petition at the Supreme Court to invalidate his election.
