‘’ Skirt and Blouse’’ Voting Emerging In Teshie
On the blind side of the constituents of Ledzokuku, Nathaniel Ayettey, the man who has won the hearts of the residents of the Constituency in the Greater Accra region and was vying to unseat the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), on Sunday May 10, 2020, at 5pm at the Best Western Hotel Nungua, shockingly stepped down under bizarre circumstances ahead of the upcoming Parliamentary primaries.
According to sources, Nathaniel Ayettey’s withdrawal from the race to allow Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, who is now a Deputy Health Minister, to go unopposed, has turned to be a shocker to most of the residents in the Constituency, especially some of the party top officials.
Out of shock, most of the residents, as well as party executives in the Constituency are threatening to vote ‘’ skirt and Blouse’’ on December 7, 2020 to teach the NPP a lesson.
The forced withdrawal as gathered, was orchestrated by some party top officials of the NPP and top government officials at the Presidency. They are said to have mounted pressure on Mr Ayettey, to step down and pave way for Dr. Okoe Boye.
The incumbent MP, it was gathered has endeared himself to hearts of the party loyalists at the Jubilee House due to his eloquence in political discourse and sublime display of knowledge on health issues, but on the political terrain at Ledzokuku, Dr. Okoe-Boye, has failed abysmally, yet he was offered the Ministerial post by the President.
It was revealed that due to Dr. Okoe Boye’s immaturity towards the party grassroots in the Constituency, the party members pushed Nathaniel Ayettey to contest him.
Further checks gathered that Nathaniel Ayettey’s message ended up gaining grounds like wild fire, which made him the preferred choice over the incumbent MP, who feared losing the upcoming Primary, hence worked behind the scene to get his contender to step aside for him to go unopposed.
According to the source, the man whose hands were twisted was promised to be given an appointment in government, but nothing has happened since he stepped aside, nobody has even called to say hello to him.
A few week ago, a group calling itself concerned NPP Members of Ledzokuku Constituency, vehemently kicked against attempts by the regional executives and some national executives of the governing party from imposing Dr. Okoe Boye on them to contest unopposed in the impending primary, and their fears have been confirmed.
The group later accused the MP of creating deep cracks in the Constituency, as well as exhibiting gross disrespect to the Constituency executives and structures of the party.
According to Mr Sam Laryea, a former Past Research and Elections Officer for the Party in the Constituency, the MP, has stepped on too many toes, including demonstrating arrogance, speaking to the elderly in the Constituency rudely and failed to partake in many celebrations amongst others.
The Convener, who accused Dr. Okoe Boye of being at loggerheads with all opinion leaders in the Constituency, he further stressed that NPP chances in the Constituency is shaky, hence the need for the party at the Regional and National level to create a level playing field for the MP to be contested by Nathaniel Ayettey.
The pressure became too much and they had to accept the decision brokered at a meeting with the MP at the Best Western, Accra Beach Hotel at Nungua, in Accra where he peacefully declared his support for Dr. Okoe Boye.
‘’I believe that a concerted effort is needed in fighting the ravaging menace of COVID-19 and hence the need to step down and afford Hon. Dr. BenardOkoeBoye the peace of mind to deal decisively with this menace at the local level’’, Mr Ayettey, said, adding ‘’It is also, my hope that this decision will allow me to concentrate on my work as the patron of my party in my constituency’’.
The Constituency Second Vice-chairman, Mr Clifford Martey Korley, who was at the Best Western Hotel noted that ‘’ It takes bravery, warriors and positive minded individuals to take good the decision when the odd are baring. This is why we cherish you, even more, Nathaniel Ayettey, because you sacrificed time, effort, resources, and placed the interest of our dear party above everything else’’.
Mr Martey Korley added that ‘’ Such gestures of selflessness cannot easily be forgotten neither can they go unnoticed. This is why we would first of all like to extend our warmest regards to you and your teeming supporters for hoisting the flag of unity and then also congratulate you for being a winner of virtuous values’’.
The former Chairman of the Constituency, Mordecai Quarshie, who has been at logger heads with Dr Okoe-Boye for years due to his arrogance and disrespect wrote this about Nathaniel just after the ceremony “I have witnessed one of the most remarkable acts of selflessness, patriotism and teamwork. It is always emotive and uplifting to see someone elevate group/collective wellbeing over their own legitimate parochial interests. That is exactly how I felt as I watched Nathaniel Ayettey withdraw his nomination for Parliamentary Candidate of NPP Ledzokuku”.
Currently, there is tension in the constituency as most of the delegates are threatening to show the party red card in the upcoming elections as to why they forcibly asked Nathaniel Ayettey to step down.
Scores of residents in an interview said the MP is no more popular in the constituency and might lose the Parliamentary seat to the NDC hence the party should revise its decision and allow the incumbent to be contested since he also contested somebody.
Meanwhile, all attempts to speak to Mr Nathaniel Ayettey on this developing story has proved futile, as we keep following for updates.
