Blacklists Kofi Boakye’s Men & Northerners In Ashanti Region
Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, is mistrusting everybody in the region, especially the personnel of the Ghana Police Service (GPS), and people believed to be from the three northern regions.
According to him, he has every reason to conclude that the recent transfer of Police Personnel to the Ashanti Region, are all members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to help in rigging the 2016 elections in that region.
It comes days after the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Nathan Kofi Boakye, had invited bigwigs in the NDC and the NPP to his office and warned them against fomenting trouble in the region.
Interestingly, Mr. Antwi-Boasiako, is going about in the Kumasi metropolis arresting people believed to be from the three northern regions, claiming that they had been bussed into Kumasi by the NDC to participate in the limited voter registration exercise with the hope of shoring up NDC’s votes in 2016 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
He described the ongoing arrest by a specialized taskforce of NPP macho men, he had created as “citizens’ arrests” adding it is aimed towards preventing the NDC from vote rigging in the Ashanti Region.
His acts according to political watchers, could lead to trouble in the Ashanti Region. They argued that soon people could take the law into their own hands because, Mr. Antwi-Boasiako a “Galamsey” operator popularly known as “Chairman Wontumi” has created the atmosphere for mistrust of the law enforcement officers.
“Chairman Wontumi”, had claimed that about 100 bussed fresh voters he (Wontumi) suspects to be members of the ruling NDC from the Upper East Region, were arrested in the various electoral areas of the Ashanti Region, attempting to register for the next general elections in 2016.
As a way of verifying the intelligence he picked up, “Chairman Wontumi” revealed that he assembled his men at vantage areas to prevent the bussed voters from registering.
He claimed that in all, 60 culprits were arrested, but 13 were handed over to the Zongo Police Station, where they have been made to write their statements.
Accra-based Peace FM, reported that an eyewitness who spoke to the radio station, said some of the culprits confessed to them that they were asked to come and register at the Asawase, Oforikrom, Alabar, New Edubiase and Tepa areas.
Speaking on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia programme, “Chairman Wontumi” said that he was ready to face any Police Personnel, who has come to the Ashanti Region to help in rigging the 2016 elections.
“Any police personnel, who have come to the Ashanti Region to face Wontumi, should stand firm because I won’t give anybody the chance to rig elections again in the Ashanti Region; even God knows it won’t work in this region. I have been praying to God that anybody who want to rig the 2016 elections should be inflicted with sickness; rigging will not happen again in this country…If you come to the Ashanti Region, the police officers who are being transferred to this region are all NDC members, who are in the Police Service and I am telling you the truth; when we arrested the fresh voters, some of them confessed to us that they were led by a police officer in Suame, a suburb of Kumasi, acting as an agent for NDC who is responsible for their arrival in the region……If they bring NDC members in EC to come and administer the electoral processes in this region, we will know how to live with them,” he asserted.
