It appears the time has come for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rethink about Ashanti Region as its stronghold, after a successful tour last week by President John Dramani Mahama.
The tour witnessed one of the massive turnouts in the region with an open display of love for the president.
The president took his “Accounting to the People Tour” to the 7th region after Central, Western, Eastern, Brong Ahafo, Volta and the Greater Accra regions.
The other 3 regions, Northern, Upper East and Upper west, will have their share of the tour after the Ramadan festivities. Reports are, however, rife that these three regions are already preparing to receive the president.
The Accounting to the people Tour, is a government initiative rolled out to allow president Mahama to explain to the Ghanaian people what his administration has done since assuming office in 2013.
The tour gives him the opportunity to inspect ongoing projects and commission completed ones initiated by his administration. He interacts with chiefs and people as a way to take note of their concerns and find a way of addressing them.
The Ashanti regional tour was one that came with lots of expectations even before the president set foot in the region. The NPP in the region was alleged to be plotting a dirty demonstration just to mar the tour.
Their plot could, however, not see the light of day because the tour according to the Communications officer of the NDC in the Ashanti region, Samed Akalilu among other personnel who were on the tour or observed from afar was a success.
Speaking on Radio Gold’s current affairs programme, the Political Talking Point, Samed Akalilu, noted the NDC in the Ashanti region was amazed at the enthusiasm with which people in the region met the president.
“It was massive and a sight to behold” he added.
The president paid a courtesy call on Otumfour Osei Tutu II who subsequently gave his blessings to the president.
He later commissioned two of the 200 day senior high schools promised in the NDC’S 2012 manifesto, visited the Kejetia Market project, inspected the 120 bed hospital project at Fomena as well as inspect the new stadium being built at new Adubease among other activities.
The president noted that government is implementing a lot of structural reforms known as the home grown fiscal consolidated policy that is to ensure stability of the country’s economy.
He restated his desire to ensure government continues to suppress its expenditure and rather increases its income to ensure a buoyant economy.
President Mahama, said even though some of his projects are being criticised, he remains focus to his course.
‘’ I recognize that the best asset of any nation is its human resource base’’. He noted.
The NDC’s communication officer in the Ashanti Region, Samed Akaliku, however, indicated to Radio Gold that, the party was revising its strategy of 1million vote to 1.5million.
‘’This is because we were overwhelmed by the support and i realised the people have fallen for the NDC’’. He added.

The Minister of Communication, Dr. Omane Boamah has since written; “We appreciate the warm and overwhelming reception accorded President Mahama during his just ended Accounting to the People tour of the Ashanti region. To Otumfuo, Asanteman Council and the residents of the region, we say ‘y3 da moase’.
From the double commissioning of community day SHS at Adugyaman and Adobewora, girls dormitory at Bekwai SDA SHS, Renewable Energy Centre for K’ Poly among others; inspection of the Kumasi Central market and the Asawase market, roads, hospital projects at Afari (500 beds), Kumawu (120beds) &Fomena (120) beds, you stood by President Mahama- rain or shine.
Talking about showers of blessings, I cannot forget the beautiful scenes at New Edubiase where the President cut sod for the construction of a stadium. Adansi Asokwa came to a standstill when the cheering and enthusiastic youth halted the convoy with a human shield amidst drumming and dancing and requested that their president, my president, your president and most importantly OUR president speaks to them. The cheers were outstanding particularly as it was not a planned visit. Lo and behold JM emerged from the rooftop of his vehicle and delivered a short address filled with joy and thanks.
Once again to all the Chiefs and people of Ashanti region we say thank you”.
