Nana Akufo-Addo Would Have Died If He Didn’t Win 2016 Election

I am not old enough to have seen so many leaders, but I am certainly old enough to have read about them and seen few others.

In Ghana, I have lived through the period of Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills and John Dramani Mahama. These leaders approached the presidency with certain panache and you could see that, service to their people was a calling.

The first time in my life on earth that, I have seen a president, who has taken the presidency as a be-it-all and end-it-all, is with Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as the president of this country.

In 2016, there were much high hopes from a lot of Ghanaians, especially the common man, when Nana Akufo-Addo, for the first time emerged the president of Ghana.

The high hopes were as a result of the certainty that his presidency was going to do a lot of great things.

Most Ghanaians believed that he was going to turn things round for them. That he would abate their sufferings. The root for such beliefs was that he was a man of integrity and honesty.

Nana Akufo-Addo, was the man who prior to that winning the 2015 election had contested three times, but couldn’t pull through to the winners’ side. But succeeded on the fourth try.

Come with me on this journey, as I outline reasons why I think, had the 2016 elections not gone the way of Akufo-Addo, he would have gone the way of all mortals.

Lets me begin from the tangential, have you noticed that, the man’s walking has changed. He now walks with some swag as though he is in his teens.

The president now walks, beaming with smiles, like a student, who has just been promoted to Senior High School (SHS) form three.

As one of my tutors in Bishop Herman once remarked, he is walking like, he is on the moon.

Secondly, this is a man, who used to wear winter cloth in summer. President Akufo-Addo during the campaign was dressing like a goal keeper, wearing dresses that are longer and bigger than him.

When everyone is feeling hot and wearing something that conforms to the times, Akufo-Addo, is always wearing something that is opposite.

Fast forward to Akufo-Addo as president, he now wears the best of the best. When he is wearing African print, expect him to appear in his glory. I never knew Akufo-Addo, have taste until he became president.

One of the things that almost marred his chances of becoming president was his health. At the height of the campaign, Akufo-Addo was doing one regional tour, one United Kingdom to visit the hospital.

Africa Watch magazine, did a very graphic and detailed report on his health, which was widely circulated. Akufo-Addo, as president is one of the wonders of the world, since he has only traveled ones after becoming president for medical check-up.

His health was so visible that, at one encounter at the University of Ghana, Legon, while he was delivering speech, his nose started drooling, like a kid he had to use the back of his palm to clean it.

The video which went viral was so despicable that I took issues with the one who sent it to me.

The president who in the lead up to the election, was looking all sick and unkempt, is now looking healthy and bubbly.  God is indeed still in the miracle business.

President Akufo-Addo, is no stranger to talking, as a lawyer, he is paid to talk, but after becoming he has upped his game, the president has become a Shakespeare.

Give the president a prepared text, he will sing like a Canary bird, apologies to Koku Anyidoho, former deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). His rendition and phonetics of the Queens language will draw applause from the Queen of England.

The man can rattle when he is reading a speech, but let him speak extempore and you will find him wanting and not making sense.

This is a man, who was so desperate for power that, he made so many promises, as though, he will be president for life.

One, is his promise that he was going to fight corruption to a standstill. If you are conversant with the affairs of Ghana, you will wholeheartedly agree with me it is easier to steal from government than it is to greet your neighbor good morning.

We were told he had untainted public life, he was incorruptible and will not steal public funds to enrich himself and his family.

But Akufo-Addo, has shown to be selective when it comes to the fight against corruption. He is always quick to condemn past office holders and yet claim his appointees are clean.

Take the case of Alfred Obeng of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transport (BOST, contaminated fuel saga. Even before a committee set up to probe the issue had begun it work, the president cleared him of any wrongdoing.

Do you remember, former minister of energy, Boakye Agyarko and the Ameri Innovation Agreement, in opposition, the NPP declared the Ameri contract as fraudulent and promise to abrogate it, when voted into office, but what did they do, they rather went to renegotiate the deal, which was going to cost Ghana more than the initial agreement.

Remember Cash For Seat Scandal, Commonwealth Visa Scandal, Kelni GVG scandal, Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) scandal.

Akufo-Addo, has also gained notoriety for nepotism and disunity, it is very clear that, had the man not win the 2016 election, he would have gone the way of all mortals.
