Silence, we are told is golden, but an issue which has dominated discussions in the past two weeks without a word from the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), doesn’t fall within this category.
It is well past the time for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to hold a press conference or issue a press statement, as he and his party are noted for to tell Ghanaians about his stance on the two Guantanamo Bay detainees. The time is up for him to come out of his self imposed exile at his Nima Flagstaff House and tell us whether he agrees or disagrees with President, John Dramani Mahama.
Hiding behind spokespersons and party apparatchiks to do his dirty work is not going to wash with Ghanaians; he is pursuing the path many politicians take when they don’t want to be held responsible for their decisions.
This is a duty, and even a responsibility, that Nana Addo owes us as a nation; owes his supporters, especially his diehard ones who are still out there contradicting themselves on when Nana Addo was briefed about the coming into town of the detainees; owes his entire family and himself, but we can forget about his obligation to his family and to himself for now. Let us discuss his obligation to us as Ghanaians, to our ally, the United States of America (USA) and to the world.
The leader, founder, financier and flagbearer of the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP), Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom, like the president, held a press conference on Monday, where he stated his stance on the Gitmo 2 issue. This bold act of conviction and courage is what is expected of our leaders, Nana Addo, does not want to stand up and be counted.
The decision of host the two detainees is not a palatable one, the president, has stated time without number that, he swore an oath to protect the interest of Ghanaians and will not take any decision that would be inimical to Ghanaians.
The NPP, raised all the red flags about the detainees, yet their flagbearer is still hiding behind the iron curtain, so is his running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Ghanaians are not asking Nana Addo to come and explain why his party Chairman, Paul Afoko was suspended, or the General Secretary, Kwabena Adjei Agyepong was also suspended; why he took more than 100, 000 pounds from the party’s account to travel to London; why the Treasurer and the Acting Chairman, opened an account with the Ecobank at the blind side of the Chairman and the General Secretary; we are smart enough to know that, you will not speak on any of this issues, but you must come out clean on the Gitmo 2 detainees.
I heard you issued a statement yesterday from the Upper West Region, but you failed to answer the most critical question that is agitating curious minds,. Were you briefed six months ago by the United States authorities, about the intention to bring the two detainees to Ghana?
Mustapha Hameed, your spokesperson and the Communication Director of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akomea, have given conflicting accounts.
Nana Akomea, said you only knew about the Gitmo 2 detainees two weeks to their arrival, while Mustapha Hameed, said you never knew anything about them. Some other people, including Kweku Baako Jnr., have also made statements suggesting that you were kept in the dark.
The lies surrounding you is becoming too much, they are a lot of questions about what you did in France, but that is not the focus of my article today.
Nana Addo, can continue to whistle past the graveyard all he wants; he just needs to remember that, some of us, will continue asking, until we get the answers we need.
His statement in the Upper West Region, was at best a smokescreen, a good leader is one who takes decisive decisions, even when the decision is unpopular among his people.
Nana Addo waited until a lot of people have spoken on the matter and has found a safe haven before finally making a half-baked statement.
For so long our politicians have taken us for granted, what they do in the dark is different from what they do in the light.
Well, if is true that Nana Addo was indeed briefed six months before the detainees came into the country and has allowed his attack Dogs to descend on President Mahama, then clearly fits the narrative of someone who is coward and clueless.
This is not a task he can have Nana Akomea or Mustapha Hameed or any of his other minions do for him. This is something Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has to do for Nana Addo.
Before he reaches Accra, we are all expecting him to clear the air on the issue.
President John Dramani Mahama and Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom of the PPP stepped in front of the Klieg lights of TV stations, microphones and a host of journalists and answered questions.
We expect nothing less from Nana Addo. This deafening silence on the fact that he was briefed six months ago is definitely not golden.
