The 2008 and the 2012 Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is in the market for a pre-national delegate’s congress shopping for a new image to woo delegates to vote for him, as the party prepares to go to congress to elect a flagbearer.
His latest attempt for a new image, has exposed him and what he stands for. Nana Addo, has always embarked on popularity contest and that explains why the Presidency has eluded him since 1994, when he first made the attempt to lead the NPP into that election.
The Italian Philosopher, Machiavelli, in the sixteenth century wrote that followers expect the prince to possess a set of qualities that includes: generosity, mercy, humaneness, honesty, strength, decisiveness. By extension, a leader would make a better and a great leader with the
Nana Addo, is the opposite of all the qualities of a leader enumerated above, he is indecisive, he lacks the strength of character to rain in members of his family and party, who have turned themselves into merchant of insult.
In modern times, images have been substituted for reputation. It is no surprise that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, whose leadership qualities do not include the ones listed above, is struggling to polish his non-existent image. His reputation as a drug user is nothing good to write home about and no matter how he tries to polish his image, his bad reputation precedes him.
Then the question that has repeatedly imprisoned the mind of right thinking Ghanaians, who have rejected him twice, is: how did the NPP delegates vote for Nana Addo among the tall list of very capable and more qualified persons in the NPP as their leader? What happened? What went wrong?
Two reasons stand out why the delegates keep electing a flagbearer like Nana Addo. First, the NPP attracts few men of first-rate ability. Men of substance and stature make enemies and therefore are not electable; if you doubt me, ask Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, he was told to go to hell and rot, when he said that Nana Addo does not appeal to floating voters. He also indicated that after presenting him on two consecutive occasions, it was time for the party look for a marketable candidate.
Dr. Kobena Arthur Kennedy was also ex-communicated when he criticized the leadership style of Nana Addo and why he thought the party lost the 2008 elections, in his book “Chasing the Elephant into the Bush, the Politics of Complacency”. He was giving the marching orders amidst insults and threats.
Alan Kyeremanten, who is a darling boy of ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor, has not been spared the vitriolic because of his affinity to President Kufuor, but even him, as though subtle, has also suffered the baptism of fire from Nana camp.
Dr. Wereko Brobbey, Dr Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe, have all been under the radar of the uncouth characters, who represent the interest of Nana Addo.
In all these instances, Nana Addo has never found it prudent and wise to issue a statement distancing himself from the behavior and attitudes of these goons, who represent everything negative about his politics.
In all these instances Nana
Second, the delegates of the NPP do not object to mediocrity as long as their palms are greased with a bribe of any sort.
Nobody wants to follow a leader who thinks he’s better than anyone else. Arrogant leaders lose the respect of his people. And Nana Addo, has lost the respect of Ghanaians for his arrogance. Through selfishness, people can tell when you want to use them merely to reach your personal and parochial goal.
The dispatch with which his office, issued a statement titled “Akufo-Addo, Reacts to Yet Another Lie”, to ostensibly distance him from the story of his association with the owner of Le Baron Hotel, David Kwawdo Anim, who has been arrested at the Heathrow Airport for drug possession is mind boggling.
As far as my memory serves me, this is the first time Nana Addo, has come out to publicly distance himself from a drug baron.
I am suspecting two things, first, is it that he knows the gentleman in question and has dealt with him. In fact they are rumours that the gentleman sponsored his 2012 presidential campaign with 2 million United States dollars, as well as donated branded Le Baron Motorbikes to the party.
Secondly, it is becoming obvious that Alan Kwawdo Kyeremanten’s assertion that Nana Addo, does not appeal to floating voters is true and the man is trying desperately now to present a new image.
Wash a pig, cloth a pig, it will still remain a pig, goes the saying. The wikileak report released sometime ago, had two senior members of the society say that Nana Addo, is a consumer of ‘wee’. The party and his aides tried hard to defend him, but all to no avail.
This latest twist to his association to drug barons is the last straw. Ghanaians deserve a better leader than Nana Addo. We are broke and need money, but we cannot mortgage the future of this country to leaders associated with drug barons.
When Nana Addo, was the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the erstwhile John Agyekum Kufuor administration, diplomatic passport was sold like groundnut to people who could afford, it was no wonder when Ghana was referred as Cocaine Coast, instead of the Gold Coast.
The man can run, but he can’t hide, it is said that character is like pregnancy, you can’t hidden, no matter how you try. Nana Addo, has been painted and repainted, polished and repolished, yet still the spots on him are so hard that it can never be washed off.
Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten, is the new face of the party, he has the characteristics of a leader, he walks, talks, and carries himself like a true leader. He does not carry the baggage of a sordid past as Nana Addo.
Talk of anything that does not define good leaders and the name of Nana Addo, will pop up.
They can issue as many statements as the ink in his office, can allow, they are no enough image shops in the world that could change him. Ghana and Ghanaians deserve better.
