..Mother Of Convicted “Assassin” Popup Three Days After Arrest and Conviction
The mother of Charles Antwi, who said he wanted to kill President John Dramani Mahama, has confirmed suspicion held by a section of the pubic that, her son was mentally unstable.
The 66-year-old Madam Afia Agyaponmaa, who sounded very worried said this when she granted an interview to Accra-based, Asempa FM yesterday.
But what is strange is that, she and other family members of the convicted felon waited for nearly three days until the relative was convicted albeit under dramatic circumstances.
According to the mother of eight, her son who is the seventh of her children, has been unwell for the past two years adding, that for a while now, he has been threatening to kill President John Mahama, which she had warn him to desist from, but to no avail.
She revealed him to be taxi driver.
She said that on a number of occasions, she tried to take her son to a prayer camp for deliverance, but he resisted. In one occasion when she was able to take him to one of such prayer camps at Sunyani Tanoso, he succeeded in running away.
About a week ago, Charles left their Dadeisoaba village in the Brong Ahafo Region to one of his siblings in Accra. She continued that, last Sunday, Charles according to Madam Agyaponmaa’s information, left home to town without telling his sibling where exactly he was going.
It was, therefore, surprising that later on, her son was later brought home in the company of security officers that he has been arrested for attempted assassination of the president at his Ringway Assemblies of God Church, the woman narrated.
Madam Agyaponmaa, a widow, said the family has no history of mental problem, and her son does not smoke wee.
Charles is said to have completed form four. She pleaded with the authority to temper justice with mercy or reduce the number of years as they are dealing with a mentally unstable man.
Security operatives on guard at President Mahama’s church prevented what could have been a bloody Sunday after they found a loaded gun on the young man.
The 36-old-man according to a statement from the Ministry of Communications, was “fidgety” and looked “suspicious.”
President John Mahama and his family who worship at the Ringway Gospel Centre branch of the Assemblies of God Church, were not in church on Sunday, according to the statement.
The man’s suspicious behaviour apparently gave him away as the security officers on duty whisked him away before he could cause any harm.
Apart from the first family, other key government officials including the Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Woode, attend the same church.
Meanwhile, according to the Communications Ministry, investigations are still ongoing.
