Wife of the late President, John Atta Mills, Dr. Ernestina Naadu Mills, has as part of her “Ghana First Lady Senior High School (SHS) Bible Project”, distributed Bibles to five schools in the three northern regions and the Brong Ahafo Region.
The schools were, the Bolgatanga Girls’ SHS in the Upper East Region, Tamale Girls SHS and Bole SHS in the Northern Region, Wa SHS in the Upper West Region, and the Sunyani SHS in the Brong Ahafo Region.
The former first lady, who described the project as her heartfelt passion to reach out to tomorrow’s leaders today with the word of God, encouraged beneficiaries not to just read the Bible, but do what it says.
“As a young person, my own personal encounter with the Bible was significant, and it transformed my life.
I, therefore, urge you to read this New Living Translation Bible that I am placing in your hands and obey what it says”, she said.
The former first lady noted that, the Bible as a precious resource, does not only teach what is good and what is wrong, nor transforms lives, but also addresses cankers such as; inter-tribal, communal conflict, poverty, disease among others that mother Ghana is confronted with.
Encouraging the students to devote their time in reading the Bible and as such turn to God in times of trouble and need, Dr. Naadu Mills, revealed that last year, when her husband, President Mills suddenly died, the Bible was her most important source of comfort and solace.
She added that God still speak to people privately through His word, thus the need to consider the reading of the Bible very serious.
The former first lady, was of full praise to Tyndale publishers, a United State of America (USA), based non-profitable publishers of the Bible, who have agreed to provide five hundred thousand [500,000] copies at the cost of Ten Million Ghana Cedis (GH 10,000,000) for free distribution.
She was also grateful to Scripture Union (SU) of Ghana for accepting to partner with Tyndale and as such devoting their time in making sure that her project becomes a reality.
She urged the students to study seriously so as to achieve their educational ambitions. She also donated Ten Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH 10,000) and assorted drinks to the students. She was very optimistic that all students in the second cycle will benefit from her Bible distribution.
The Upper East Regional Minister, Daniel Syme, who assisted Mrs. Mills to distribute the Bibles to the students, urged them to put it in to good use, adding that immorality and social vises should be history if they really put it in to good use.
The immediate past Director General of S U Ghana, Mr. Jude Hama on his part, stated that the former first lady’s project will help if not eradicate, reduce biblical illiteracy among beneficiaries.
Head Mistress of Bolgatanga Girls’ SHS, Madam Sulemana Memuna, was very grateful to the former first lady, for not just donating the Bibles to the students, but choosing her school as the first recipient in the region.
She urged the students to use the Bibles for the purpose for which it was been given to them. Some of the beneficiaries, who spoke to this paper expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the former first lady for her gesture.
