Government Tells Bawumia
By Gifty Arthur
Government has rejected claims by the vice presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia that, president John Mahama, does not read, reason he is unable to tell how much was used in the redenomination exercise in 2007, under president John Agyekum Kufuor’s administration.
A Deputy Minister of Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said that views espoused by Dr Bawumia was absolutely untrue, because the president he
argued is “deeper” and appreciates issues more than all the three other aspirants, cleared by the Electoral Commission (EC) to contest the coming presidential and parliamentary elections.
According to the Deputy Minister, “There’s nobody in this presidential race that is deeper than the president. He doesn’t go out to speak on any matter without checking making sure that all the Is are dotted and Ts crossed.
He said, this at TV3’s Newspaper review programme (New Day) Thursday morning, when he sort to reply Dr. Bawumia’s position that, the president showed clear case of incompetence and lack of reading when he questioned he Bawumia, the cost of the redenomination exercise, while a deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana (GoG).
Mr. Ofosu, who said he’s had personal experiences with the president on how he appreciates issue and can tell that he has the ability to consume information far better than those he is contesting, including Dr. Bawumia’ boss, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He continued that, Dr. Bamumia, refusal to personally make that information available when he was at the helm of affairs, but chooses to refer the president to an online publication purported to be coming from the then governor, Paul Acquah, was unacceptable.
In his view, the former deputy governor who the NPP prides as being behind the success of that redenomination exercise must be able to readily provide information on that exercise instead of directing people to an online publication.
Dr. Bawumia refers to a Ghanaweb publication which itself was sourced from the Daily Graphic that the Bank of Ghana governor had put out something. He as a deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana should be a source of information himself especially when the NPP claims that he was the man behind the redenomination exercise as they will have us believe.
I am a deputy minister of Communications, if tomorrow I should leave office and you ask me to tell you how much the national data centre, I will not refer you to a publication in the Ghanaweb.
I will tell you right away that we did that data centre through the help of DANIDA and it cost us $32million and I will give you details I won’t say go and look at Ghanaweb portal to have information about it. To the extent that he cannot give first hand information authoritative information with he as the source then there is a difficulty.
He said if there was anybody who over the period has shown lack of reading and incompetence; it is Dr. Bawumia and Nana Addo who go about making claims which are unfounded and are immediately disputed by independent individuals and organizations.
He enumerated some accusations by the two men in the public space which he believed were blatant falsehoods. He mentioned Nana Addo’s corruption claim of the newly built Ridge Hospital in Accra, the Kasoa Interchange project etc. On Dr. Bawumia, he said he peddled lies when at a lecture in March 25 2014 at the Central University, he alleged that the African Development Bank (AfDB) had blacklisted Ghana when in actual fact it hadn’t.
He continued that the vice presidential candidate also recently peddled another falsehood when he stood at Accra Polytechnic and accused government of sending $250million in dollars to a local bank in the name of Ghana infrastructural fund and so government broke the Bank of Ghana rules, when in fact the truth was that it was transferred in Cedis. According to him these are signs of people who fail to read and abreast themselves with the facts but want to turn round to accuse someone.
During his tour of the Greater Accra Region this week, president Mahama, challenged Dr. Bawumia to reveal the cost of the cedi redenomination exercise in 2007.
Government, at the time said the purpose of the exercise was to address past episodes of high inflation rates and other economic challenges
Speaking at a rally in the Ablekuma North constituency, President Mahama said since Dr. Bawumia was a Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana at the time the cedi redenomination was carried out, he should be able to tell Ghanaians how much it cost government to undertake the exercise.
“Do we remember the cedi redenomination exercise under President Kufuor? During that time, someone [Bawumia] was the Deputy Bank of Ghana and up till now, even me as a President do not know the cost of the redenomination exercise.
But in what appears to be a clear response to the NPP claims that he is incompetent, the President also indicated that the party has no right to label him as such when it is unable to give full account of a simple redenomination exercise.
“Up till today, no Ghanaian knows the cost of the redenomination exercise and the same people come and say someone is incompetent. When you redenominated the cedi how much did it cost us? Simple things like these you cannot tell us and you have the nerve to come and talk about corruption. Look in the mirror and look at yourselves.

I am not saying I have done so much but I have done what I can and if others say they have not noticed what I have done, God who in heaven is my witness and he sees the good works NDC has done.”
