The Assembly member and the leadership of the Moslem community in La-Kwantung, Madina in the Greater Accra Region, have commended the managers of Centre for Poverty Alleviation (CPA), a Non-Governmental Organization(NGO) with the aim of equipping people of the Zongo communities with employable skills.
The project in collaboration with the Ghana Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA), is expected to offer skills in Information Communications Technology (ICT), Hair Dressing and Dress -Making to the numerous unskilled youth loitering in the La-Nkwantang Madina Municipal Assembly then later extended to all Zongo communities in the country.
The CPA initiative, an idea of Mr Francis –Xavier Sosu, a lawyer by profession and onetime street boy in the Zongo areas of Accra said, the initiative was a platform to contribute to the Zongo Development Platform.
The initiative which was introduced in partnership with youth –based Power House club is to reach out the numerous street children roaming the streets of Madina and its environs doing miniature jobs.
Launching the programme by Mr Wonder Madilo, a former National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Mr Francis-Xavier Sosu said, many dwellers in the area particularly in the Zongo communities live in very dire conditions with no income.
“Poverty has led many children becoming victims of child labour whilst a chunk of them drop out of school. Being a cosmopolitan area with many migrants from the rural areas particularly the North, most young girls caught up in the menace of Kayayei business where they are heavily exploited”, he said
He maintained that as if this is not enough in the night some of them are turned into sex slaves as they exchange sex for places to lay their head after a hard day’s work of carrying heavy loads.
The Assembly member for Madina West Electoral Area in the Greater Accra Region, Alhaji Abdul Raman Rahim made this commendation in an interview flanged by some Moslem Chiefs with The Herald after the launch of the CPA at colourful ceremony in Madina –Zongo junction.
According to him, took the decision to lend his support for the project because, it is an initiative that augment’s efforts of alleviating poverty among the less privilege in the country.
He said any individual that takes the bold initiative the less privilege in the society must be supported hence his decision to support the activities.
He commended the mangers of NGO for assisting in the efforts to create a better environment for the less privilege in his electoral area.
