The Queen of Peace Roman Catholic in Madina, has launched its 50th anniversary celebration of Catholic Evangelism in Accra and its catchment area, with a promise of building “a family of faith, love and unity”.
The year-long celebration, which was officially launched last Sunday at the forecourt of the church by the Parish Priest, Very Rev. Fr. Charles Owusu-Ansah, was under the theme, “Queen of Peace Catholic Church @ 50, Come, Let Us Build a Family of Faith, Love and Unity”.
According to the Anniversary Planning Committee, the activities for the celebration, would be climaxed next year with a grand durbar.
The mammoth launch, was highly attended by several dignitaries including Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Dzifa Abla Gomashie-Ahiaglo, Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina-Abokobi, Alhaji Amadu Sorogho, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for La-Nkwantanang/Madina, Franklin Anku, the First Resident Priest of the church, Rev. Father Joseph Vissa, among others.
The Queen of Peace Catholic Church, which started with a very small number of congregants from a classroom at the Madina Social Welfare, The Herald gathered, currently has over three thousand worshipers.
As part of efforts to expand and spread evangelism mission in every society, the Church has also established several branches around her catchment areas like Adenta, Ashongman, Agbogba, Adjiringanor and others. At the last count, the Church has established twelve other Churches within the 49 years of her existence.
On education, the Queen of Peace Catholic Church, also established a basic school made up of Kindergarten, Primary and JHS Schools on her compound. The Anniversary Planning Committee, was elated at both academically and extracurricular activities performance of the Queen of Peace Basic Schools in the Madina District of Greater.
With an establishment of Co-operative Credit Union, under the instrumentality of Society of African Mission (SMA) Priest, Rev. Fr. Moulders and some parishioners, the Credit Union today, has grown and become competitive with a total asset of over GH¢1.7 billion, according to 2013 Audit report by the Union.
Queen of Peace Hall Complex
Queen of Peace Church is putting up a state-of-the-art complex hall. It consists of a main hall and several conference halls with offices. As at now the complex is about 60 per cent complete and billed to be one of the best architecture in the Eastern part of Accra.
Acquisition of 40 plots of Land
The Church has acquired 40 plots of land at Akporman for future development, but is yet to decide on what purpose the land can be put to, but discussions are ongoing with the hope of turning it in a prayer and education retreat.
According to the organizers, the achievements of the church are “laudable” and call for celebration, hence everybody especially members of the church to support “the Church to make this celebration meaningful and gorgeous”.
Both the MCE and MP, donated various cash amounts towards the anniversary celebration with an assurance to support the church in various other capacities.
In a brief remark first by the MCE, he said his doors at the assembly were opened for suggestions, discussion and sharing of ideas, either by the leadership of the church or any individual as to how to develop Madina.
On the part of the Deputy Minister, she promised to establish an award scheme for the best Queen of Peace JHS student in the BECE exams. She tasked the leadership of the church to bring her the name of such student in this year’s exams.
