Madam Dzifa Ativor And The Hypocrisy Of Our Politics

One day in the future, our great great great grand children, will look back to find out when we finally lost our country, when hypocrisy took a hold on our conscience.

People lose their conscience, because they laugh when opponents, who do not share in their political belief goes missing, until there is nobody left to laugh.

The problem of tribal comments no matter how innocuous they are, are not new to us, some have even incited other tribes to pick up arms and slaughter other tribes, and you guess right, purely for political reasons.

I am a Muslim, and my religion preaches strongly against tribalism, so before you accuse me of supporting tribal comments, you must first understand my orientation formed from my first and true love Islam.

In one of the Hadith quoted by one of the disciples of Prophet Muhammed (SAW), he said “He who calls for `Asabiyyah (nationalism/tribalism) is as if he bit his father’s genitals.” Also, “He is not one us who calls for `Asabiyyah, (nationalism/tribalism) or who fights for `Asabiyyah or who dies for `Asabiyyah.” “One of us,” here means, “a Muslim,”

There is no denying the disdain for tribalism by the prophet of Islam. In other narrations, of fighting for tribalism he said to “leave it, it is rotten.” Again he is narrated to have said, “…Behold, Allah (God) has removed from you the arrogance of the Time of Jahiliyyah (Ignorance) with its boast of ancestral glories. Man is but an Allah (God)-fearing believer or an unfortunate sinner. All people are the children of Adam, and Adam was created out of dust.”

The New Testament likewise does not favor tribalism. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” (Galatians 3:28-29)
The two foremost religions in the world, abhors tribalism and so I am not for a minute going to pretend, I do otherwise.

What troubles me, is the level of hypocrisy that has eaten deep into our national conscience. We now live in an era, akin to that of the animal kingdom, where the right guaranteed all of us; some have it more than others.

The former Minister of Transport, Madam Dzifa Ativor, who is by far one of the best Ministers, we have had since 1992, when we ushered in the 1992 democratic dispensation, is reported have said that, “When the NPP came to power in 2001, a lot of our people were sent to prison; Victor Selormey, Dan Abordakpui, and so on, was imprisoned. Was it because no other person committed crime in Ghana? But it was only Ewes that they jailed”.

“I want to entreat you not to do anything for me and Fifi Kwetey to go to prison. It lies with you all to ensure that no Ewe person goes to prison.

So I am pleading with you to work hard and deliver the 120 thousand votes target for the party in the constituency”, she stressed.

As I mentioned earlier, I do not condone or subscribe to these comments, but we cannot run away from events that happened in the past. The critical questions we should be asking is, did the above mentioned individuals, go to jail or not?

When you know someone so well, you do not to light a candle in the afternoon to be able to make them out. Madam Dzifa Ativor, as a deputy minister and subsequently minister, has discharged herself quite creditably. In fact, she did something that was alien to our politics. She showed leadership, when she took the fall for a bus branding contract signed between her ministry and Smartys.

She has never in her public life put herself up for criticism; her words are always measured and respectful. I remember when workers of Metro Mass Transit (MMT), embarked on a sit down strike, and she went there to speak to them, her words, her plea, her composure, was what got the workers to call off the strike immediately.

Anybody who have had the opportunity of engaging her, will tell you, what a wonderful mother she is, her home is opened to all, regardless of who you are, where you come from, which tribe you belong to etc.

I a Kotokoli man, the only minister, whose home I could walk into was hers, so to suggest even a slightest hint of her being a tribalist, is absolutely ridiculous.

A political party, which has busied itself in doing nothing, apart from finding fault with everything anybody does, has waded into the fray.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP), since 2012, have been preparing the ground and looking for another reason or excuse to hang their 2016 loss on.

Anybody, as we say here, who lives in a glass house, must not throw stones. Members of the NPP, have made explosive tribal comments than, what Madam Dzifa, is reported to have said at a party rally and not at any secret location or meeting.

If she has any ill-motive, she wouldn’t have made such statement in public, knowing full well she is being recorded.

What did Nana Addo say in confidence “We Akans”, did Nana Akomea, find it prudent to condemn the irresponsible comment from his flagbearer?

He has find time and the presence of mind to issue a statement condemning the comments of Madam Dzifa Ativor. Such a person will dress up on Sunday and go to Church, yet his heart is as dark as it comes, hypocrite, hypocrite, and hypocrite.

Where was he, when in the Eastern Region Osafo Marfo, said that because they the (Akans), have the resources that hold this country together, why shouldn’t they be the ones to control the country i.e be in charge of the country.

That mentality is what led Osama Bin Laden to become the most wanted man in the world, whiles he was still alive. He believed the Arabs, have the most treasured, and sought after resources in the world, so why should they be subservient to the West.

So what is the difference between Osafo Marfo and Osama Bin Laden?

Kennedy Agyapong, has made the worst of comments, we all behaved like women and coiled into our shelves, today, those who behaved like holier than thou, are calling for the crucifixion of Madam Dzifa Ativor.

A man I respect so much and admire, those who know me up close and ardent readers of my articles, will bear me out, about my love for the former President, Jerry John Rawlings. He has also issued a statement condemning the noble woman, I find it rather strange that, when members of the NPP, made similar comments, Jerry Rawlings, did not issue a statement, perhaps he was out of the country, during the turbulent moments of 2012.

What has changed now, what really does the founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) want?

The joy of every parent is to live to see their children do better than they did, the NDC, is growing, the party is transforming, Chairman Rawlings, should be happy and stop trying to put impediments on the way of the party.

What was said yesterday is wrong, what was said today is equally wrong, but the gravamen of what was said, should determine the punishment, Madam Ativor is being hanged for a minor crime, when the bigger culprits are out there, walking freely and also pointing accusing fingers.

I salute Madam Ativor, for her braveness in not hiding in the dark to say, what we all know. The politicians, who are asking for her blood, say worst things when they meet party faithful, enough of the hypocrisy.
