The age old saying that, he who seeks equity must come with clean hands, has not been employed in the case between the Okyehene and the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as subjects of the traditional ruler of the Akyem Abuakwa, are demanding apology from the politician over his alleged insult on the chief, with more insults.

OkYEHEHE 3

Residence of Kyebi, are outraged and indeed, demonstrated over comments that, but for the good works of former President John Mahama, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin and his subjects, would have continued to drink water with animals, reference to the water treatment plant project in the area.

The plant, constructed at the cost of 7.9 million Euros, was commissioned in March 2014 by President Mahama, as part of a six projects serving Akyem Asafo and Apedwa in the East Akyem Municipality, Kwabeng and Anyinam in the Atiwa District and Osenase in the West Akyem District in the Eastern Region.

Interestingly, Mr Zu and the NDC, were given three days to apologize or be banned from any political party activity in the area.

Though Kwame Zu’s comment, has been described as offensive, some Ghanaians who followed the demonstration led by angry chiefs, queen mothers of Kyebi, on Monday, ostensibly to cause the NDC to apologize for what the State Secretary of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council, Daniel Marfo Ofori-Atta, calls “abusive and provocative statement”, are questioning why the demonstrators, equally heaped insults on the accused and his party.

Clad in red and black outfits, the people marched through the Kyebi township amidst the firing of muskets and bearing placards with inscriptions such as “Okyenman will not tolerate this nonsense”, “NDC and Zu Okyeman, has rejected you”, “NDC stop this foolish reckless talk”, “Okyenhene is our King leave him alone”.

Expressing disgust about the action of the demonstrators, social media users, wondered if there was moral justification for the angry demonstrators to wield placards some of which read “NDC stop this foolish and reckless talk, NDC and Zu Okyeman won’t Forgive you, this nonsense from NDC must stop, NDC your manners stink, shameless NDC, NDC stop this gutter politics, Kyebi has what NDC will never have” among others.

Though Mr Zu, has apologized, the action of the demonstrators whose placards were mostly shared on social media platforms by supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), have been described as not deserving any apology whatsoever.

The demonstration, has also been described as ethnic and politically motivated, as they cite instances where other people from other areas in the country, have attacked other chiefs, but no such thing was done to them. The case of the NPP’s National Chairman, Freddy Blay and Togbe Afede, was used as an example.

Mr Zu, while addressing participants of a demonstration by the Coalition for National Sovereignty, said among others that a water treatment project which was provided in Kyebi, saved the Okyenhene from drinking from the same river animals drank from.

Even before the demonstration on Monday, Mr Zu had issued a statement explaining himself and apologizing to Okyehene.

Part of his statement said “I did make a statement to the effect that until potable water was provided for the Okyenhene and his people, they drank unwholesome water. The said statement was used in good faith and figuratively to underscore that the Okyenhene did not drink different water from his subjects, again flowing from the love he has for his people.”

“After deeply reflecting over the said statement and the interpretation given it by a section of the public, which interpretation is plausible, I wholeheartedly regret for making that statement. I hereby wish to unreservedly render an unqualified apology to the Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council and indeed all Ghanaians for the said statement”.

He continued “The said statement was used in good faith and figuratively to underscore that the Okyenhene did not drink different water from his subjects, again flowing from the love he has for his people. After deeply reflecting over the said statement and the interpretation given it by a section of the public, which interpretation is plausible, I wholeheartedly regret for making that statement.”

“I hereby wish to unreservedly render an unqualified apology to the Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council and indeed all Ghanaians for the said statement.I revere and have always revered the chieftaincy institution in Ghana and for that matter hold the Okyenhene in high esteem and would not deliberately undermine the chiefly powers of the Okyenhene who has shown great leadership over the years.”

According to Joy News, the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council, has rejected the apology, because it claims the statement did not sound remorseful enough.

Meanwhile, the National Organiser of the NDC, has said that the party has become an easy target for Akyems to attack with the least mistake.

Joshua Akamba, believes it is something Akyems, have been waiting for with bated breath, so they would proceed to make the NDC pay for it.

He told Evans Mensah on Newsnight on Joy FM Monday that, he does not understand why the Akyems are burnt on punishing the party for the sins of a member in the latest case involving Mr Zu.

“It is something that they are looking for, it is something they wanted and then it did happen with one of our members…even in the Eastern region itself, our former Chairman once made a statement which went in front of the Okyehene palace, it was him alone that was dealt with not the whole party,” he said.

Mr Akamba, quizzed whether their behaviour is borne out of the fact that “this time they have their son as the president so the NDC must suffer for it?”

STATEMENT OF APOLOGY TO THE OKYENHENE AND THE AKYEM ABUAKWA TRADITIONAL COUNCIL

It has come to my attention that a statement I made at a demonstration organised by the Coalition for National Sovereignty which was held in Kumasi on the 19th day of September 2019 has generated a furore.

While making a presentation at the said demonstration, I did point out to many ills of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led government that threatens our collective existence as a nation. In a very charged atmosphere, I did make a statement regarding the remarkable efforts made by President John Dramani Mahama to provide potable water for inhabitants of Kyebi and its surrounding areas some of whom hitherto were drinking unwholesome water.

Knowing that the Okyenhene just like most traditional rulers in Ghana have deep love for their people and at all times empathise with them, I did make a statement to the effect that until potable water was provided for the Okyenhene and his people, they drank unwholesome water. The said statement was used in good faith and figuratively to underscore that the Okyenhene did not drink different water from his subjects, again flowing from the love he has for his people.

After deeply reflecting over the said statement and the interpretation given it by a section of the public, which interpretation is plausible, I wholeheartedly regret for making that statement. I hereby wish to unreservedly render an unqualified apology to the Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council and indeed all Ghanaians for the said statement.

I revere and have always revered the chieftaincy institution in Ghana and for that matter hold the Okyenhene in high esteem and would not deliberately undermine the chiefly powers of the Okyenhene who has shown great leadership over the years.

Once again, my sincere apologies to the Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin and the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council, and all Ghanaians for my statement.

Thank you and may God bless us all!

……Signed……..

KWAME ZU

ASHANTI REGIONAL SECRETARY, NDC
