The national character of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), I can say, died in 2007, when ex-President, John Agyekum Kufuor, decided to support the candidature of Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng in that year’s presidential primary contested by 17 people.
The party survived the storm in 2008 and 2012, but unfortunately her parts did not, as 2016, is looking like a make or break for the party.
Peace has eluded the party since that very election, but actors in the party, have failed to accept that. The New Patriotic Party has generally being seen by many as an Akan party, an allegation the party, has tried unsuccessfully to defend it. It was what pushed them to add Dombo to the Danquah-Busia tradition that we know.
President Kufuor, has been said to be an astute politician, someone, who have gone through the mill, but unfortunately in 2007, he betrayed that time-tested trust.
Tribe, has no place in our body politics, we have being able to co-exist as a united party, without tribal consideration. Since 1992, the two major political
parties, the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress, in order to achieve regional balance in their choice of candidates for running mates, have all fallen on one region or another, depending on where the Presidential candidate was coming from.
President Jerry John Rawlings from the Volta Region, in 1992, chose Kow Nkensen Arkaah, from the Central Region, in 1996, he again chose another person from the Central Region in the person of Prof. John Evans Atta Mills.
Ex-president Kufuor, also settled on Alhaji Aliu Mahama to partner him for the 2000 and 2004 election. Kufuor who was from the Ashanti Region, has Aliu Mahama from the Northern region. The same can be said of the other smaller parties.
Giving recent a chronology of events since 2007, it is obvious that Ex-President Kufuor, but for the unwritten convention that I mentioned earlier, would have settled on an Ashanti to be his running mate. It was no wonder, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, was only a ceremonial President in the eight years of Kufuor’s presidency.
Without a doubt, Alan Kwawdo Kyeremanteng, is a better candidate for me than Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. He will be a better President than Nana Addo, but unfortunately the timing of his selection was wrong.
I will want to see Alan being the first gentleman of the land, I will maybe vote for him, but I also think he picked the wrong time to be President.
As I enumerated earlier, they is unwritten convention about why all the political parties, have decided that positions in the party, especially flagbearership should be rotated. It is so that people from other regions, will not feel left out or that no matter how they served the party or excel, they will never lead the party.
The late Alhaji Aliu Mahama, said at that Congress in Legon that he has served Kufuor faithfully and referred to himself as a senior apprentice. Kufuor, if he was an experienced politician, will have realized that they was nobody better placed in the party to succeed him than his Vice-President.
His greed and selfishness to continue to have control over the party, was what informed his choice of Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng.
What could possibly have informed that choice, even a neophyte in politics, would have known that, that was a politically incorrect decision, yet he went ahead with it.
A video of a meeting in 2007, between ex-president Kufuor, with party members has gone viral. In that meeting President Kufuor is heard advising them about who he feels should succeed him, every word was directed at Nana Akufo-Addo. It was an unfortunate comments, as even twins cannot be expected to behave the same.
If you ask the NDC, they will tell you President Kufuor was the most corrupt leader, to have assume the reigns of this country, yet to him and his party people (NPP), they will tell you, he is the best person to happen to this country.
So, you see, the glass is either half full or half empty, depending on where you stand. The NPP, although I do not belong, is on the verge of collapse, this war or confusion is never going to go away. As a people we need a second force, will it be Nduom’s party, the Progressive Peoples Party, the Convention People’s Party or the Peoples National Convention.
President Kufuor, started what was to affect the party forever. One thing that has not caught the attention of people is the fact that all that is happening in the party, is targeted at Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is sure to succeed Nana Addo.
The Ashantis in the party, don’t want that to come to pass, so everything possible must be done to scuttle the chances of Nana Addo.
Tribal politics, is what has affected some countries in Africa, it is the reason for needless wars that we see around and Kufuor’s decision in 2007, was nothing but tribal.
All well-meaning members of the NPP, must direct their anger at President Kufuor, for everything that is happening in the party.
What at all has Nana Addo done or what is it that Kufuor is hiding, that he does not want the world to know, which is the reason why, he does not want Nana Addo to
ascend the presidency.
It is not my problem and don’t want to worry my head over that, am not a member of the NPP, but as a Ghanaian I am concern about how they will help to entrench our nascent democracy and put the government on its toes.
