Says Presidency Not Easy Task…
The Vice President appears to be doing something for the Ghanaian taxpayer by appealing for support and prayers for his boss; President Akufo-Addo, because leading a nation is no child’s play.
While coming to terms with the same position espoused by former President John Mahama, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, also took time, assuring the people that, Nana Addo, will deliver on his 2016 election promises.
Speaking to the Muslim community in Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region, during a nationwide Ramadan Tour, he said the task of being a president entails a lot, adding that a leader can have great vision and aspirations for his people, but if he is not guarded by God, he will work in vain.
He, therefore, asked them to pray hard and support President Akufo-Addo, for him to work assiduously to fulfill his many promises.
Bawumia said, “Being President is not easy, the work you have given to Nana Akufo-Addo is a great task, and you should help him to execute that task, as a president all your vision is to give your people more development.
“You can have the vision, but without God’s strength and guard you can’t do it, that’s why am pleading to you to continuing praying and support to help the government deliver for us to be free and happy” he added.
His admission, comes after he and his boss, now president, tagged president Mahama, as “incompetent” and rode on that mantra to win the 2016 elections.
At one of his lecture series, the then running mate said in 2015 that “Mahama has created toxic mixture of incompetence and corruption”. “We’ll reach GHC99billion by the end of this year,” the former deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana told journalists after Finance Minister Seth Terkper read the 2016 budget to Parliament.
“The interest on this debt alone is going to be six times Ghana’s oil revenue,” Dr Bawumia said.
Dr Bawumia also accused the then President of running a friends-and-family, as well as ‘dumsor’ and dead-goat economy.
Addressing party faithful on the 2nd day of his “Rise and Build Tour” in the Ashanti Region, the then NPP flagbearer, Akufo-Addo said : “the most incompetent government in the history of the 4th Republic is the government of John Dramani Mahama. We have a responsibility in the NPP to work hard and remove this government.”
According to him, every sector of the Ghanaian economy was in decline ever since the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) government assumed the helm of affairs.
He indicated that worsening living standards of Ghanaians, widespread and rampant corruption, rising levels of unemployment, declining agriculture, and enterprise failures, are all evidence of the incompetence of the Mahama-led administration.
These developments, Akufo-Addo said, requires the NPP to work hard to effect the change that Ghanaians desire, stressing that “an NPP victory in 2016 is the only way the nation can return onto the path of progress and prosperity.”
But in a response, President Mahama said “Did you hear Bawumia say incompetent Mahama? You’ve never held any responsibility near the presidency before; you don’t know what it is like to be President.
And you stand and say ‘incompetent Mahama administration,” the former President said at a rally at the Trade Fair Centre in Accra during the launch of the 60/40 project by the Greater Accra Regional Branch of the NDC ahead of the 2016 elections.
“I’ll take that from Kufuor or from Rawlings because they’ve been there before. All of you guys [NPP critics] have never ever come near the presidency. [Do] you know what it takes to be a President?
“What do you know about competence?” “All of them [NPP critics], in the offices they occupied, they should tell us what competence they displayed,” Mahama challenged.
But almost six months since the NPP took over from the NDC, not much has been seen as promised. The insecurity that this administration has plunged the one’s peaceful nation into, is what has become paramount in every discussion.
Prices of goods and service such as electricity bills, water, lorry fares, vehicle licenses, goods at the ports and foodstuffs, have seen no reduction, as some have even gone up, contrary to what was promised.
According to Dr. Bawumia, “I know Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and worked with him from 2008, 2012 and now 2017, Nana is a man of his words. He is a man who keeps his promises.
“He is a man who has sympathy for the suffering of the Ghanaian masses. He said that if given the opportunity he would establish the Zongo Development Fund to help the people in the Zongos, he has done exactly that.
Dr Bawumia was in the region and mosque last year to ask for their support in the run up to the elections and it is only proper that he comes in person again to thank them for helping the NPP win.
Alhaji Bawumia said ” we came here to thank you our brothers and sisters, our mothers and fathers who helped us so much to vote for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as president of Ghana, we are also extending the same thanks to all Ghanaians of all religions especially Brong Ahafo region people for massive votes during 2016 elections.”
He has allocated GH¢219 million for the Zongo development fund and the passage of the Zongo Development Fund law this year will make sure that every year funds are allocated from the budget for this fund and we will see a lot of development in the Zongos.”
