Jamestown Launches Walking Tour

On 17 August 2012, Jamestown Walking Tours will launch the area’s first weekly guided walking tour.

Every Saturday afternoon at 2pm, knowledgeable local guides will lead a 2 hour tour of cultural, historic and architectural sites.

As one of Accra’s oldest suburbs, Jamestown is rich with an interesting colonial and slaving history, and vibrant Ga culture.
However, the suburb traditionally suffers from negative stereotyping, and little tourist infrastructure has discouraged some tourists from
independently exploring the area.

The Jamestown Walking Tour will create a safe way for tourists to discover this community on foot, learning about its history, taking in the vibrant street atmosphere, meeting locals and trying local food.By experiencing the vitality of Jamestown first-hand, visitors better understand this community and the challenges it faces.

Stops will include the Jamestown harbour where fisherman continue the old fishing traditions, major colonial and slavery sites, a local chop bar and more.

All tour guides are young people who were born and bred in Jamestown, and offer a uniquely personal look at life in this community. Guests will even be invited to see the tour guide’s family home and meet Jamestown’s Chief. The launch will also help to create new jobs and battle youth
unemployment in the area.

The tours will be operated by the Jamestown Community Theatre Centre, a performing arts space which uses drama-based workshops and performances to empower at-risk people with skills and knowledge.
