Senior Officer Killed As Insecurity Engulfs Nation…..
Inspector Emmanuel Ashilevi of Kwabenya District Police headquarters, has died after he was shot by gang of armed men, who stormed the station to free suspected armed robbers, who were in custody. They raided the station with bullets without any form of resistance.
The Sunday dawn attack, freed six Ghanaian suspects and one Nigerian. They have been identified as; Dickson Ofori, Chubuzor Chubuzor, Edem Rockson, Emmanuel Kotey, Prince Osei, Kofi Darko and Atta Kwadwo.
The suspects are aged between 20 and 34 years.
The Kwabenya police station, has always been open for attack. It is one of the most isolated stations in Accra. It has no walls. It appears left in the bush no matter the direction one approaches the station – whether from Dome or Haatso, it looks visibly vulnerable to armed invasion of any kind. It has few buildings; mainly classrooms around it.
Aside these, keeping detained vehicles at the main entrance and behind the station, make it more prone to any attack, especially in the night as happened in yesterday’s case. There are also few officers on duty at the Kwabenya District Police in the night.
Police sources told The Herald that, Inspector Ashilevi, believed to be in his 50’s was shot in the head during the attack carried out by six armed men. It is not clear, how many police men, were on duty before and during the attack.
Blood stains were seen on the floor of the prominent police station. The District Police headquarters, has been cordoned off.
Inspector Ashilevi, died at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra, while receiving treatment.
The police service hierarchy went to the district headquarters as criminal investigations start.
They include Inspector General of Police (IGP) David Asante Apietu, Director-General of Operations, Dr. Dampare, acting CID Director-General, DCOP MaameYaaTiwaAddo-Dankwa and DCOP George Mensah.
The development comes on the back of surging attacks on security personnel by suspected criminals in the country.
Last week, two officers were shot dead by robbers, while returning from night duties in the Ashanti region, while a military officer attached to the Flagstaff House, was also killed by the roadside at Tema, a fortnight ago.
The Greater Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), ASP EfiaTenge, in a press statement issued yesterday, confirmed the incident.
The statment said that “the Accra Regional Police Command is on a manhunt for seven (7) suspects who escaped from the Kwabenya Police cells this dawn, Sunday 21st January 2018 together with some armed men who facilitated their escape”.
It added that “… one Police officer sustained gunshot wounds but unfortunately passed on whilst receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.”
The Greater Regional Police Command, has also called on the public to volunteer useful information that will help in the arrest of the escapees.
The armed men, who carried out the nefarious act are at large.
