It was predicted, and rightly so that the current executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by Paul Afoko, were going to have a hard time , with Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as the flagbearer of the party.
The reason being that they did not support him in his bid to lead the party for the third; obviously Nana Addo got a dose of his own medicine, because at the National Delegate Congress held in Tamale, the Northern Regional Capital, Nana Addo supported Jake Obetsebi Lamptey and Kwawdo Owusu Afriyie, also known as Sir John against the Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong, whom member had tipped to win.
I was not surprised, because as a loser, you do not have the knack for choosing and associating with winners.
Since the election of Paul Afoko and kwabena Agyepong, as Chairman and General Secretary respectively, they have not known peace and neither has the party, since every decision they take is viewed with Nana Addo’s lenses.
Theywere accused severally by Nana Addo’s loyalists of working to undermine his chances in the 2016 Presidential election.
Nana Addo, has also engineered through various means to render them useless and ineffective, that agenda seems to be working very well.
Since Nana Addo constituted his communication team, headed by Nana Akomea, who incidentally was the head of communication in the 2012 election, every statement the party had issued was done by Nana Akomea and signed by him.
Kwabena Agyepong, who is the General Secretary and by convention and common sense is suppose to be the mouthpiece of the party, unfortunately he has been sidelined and his role assigned to Nana Akomea.
This used not to be the case when Nana Addo’s favourite Sir John was the General Secretary; he was all over soiling himself with his loose talk. Every radio station in Ghana, have enjoyed the circus of Sir John, albeit comedy. Kwabena Agyepong on the other hand, who comes across as a fine gentleman and a better communicator than Sir John, has been muffled and told to hold onto his position ceremoniously.
What locus has Nana Akomea in the party to be issuing statements not on behalf of Nana Addo, but the party? Nana Addo, although a flagbearer, must submit himself to the structures of the party. Campaigning has not started for one to even assume that as it happened in 2008 and 2012, Nana Addo, want to hijack and run the party as if the NPP is his property. This same sense of entitlement is what is motivating Nana Addo to want to be President at all cost. He feels the country owes him and that he owns the country.
His disdain for peace is amply manifested in the way the NPP is being managed, where some people feel that by associating with him, they have the right or free passage to do as they please.
Kwabena Agyepong, has gone quiet for some time now, the last time he was heard of was when thugs invaded the NPP headquarters when he was addressed a press. Their reason for going there was to beat the day light out of him; they want to teach him a lesson for being principle.
His crime had been that he wanted the Constitution of the party respected and things done not according the whims of one person, unfortunately they are too many sycophants in the party, who are prepared to sacrifice principle for comfort that they are expecting tomorrow, God forbid should Nana Addo becomes President.
If Nana Akomea wanted to be issuing useless press releases and granting interviews to the media on behalf of the NPP, why didn’t he contest to become the General Secretary?
I can only empathize with Kwabena Agyepong, such men of panache with sense of principle are hard to come by in the NPP, he is reliving the days of Dan Botwe, whose works had sent him to Parliament.
The party had been consumed by the waywardness of Sir John and Jake, such that they do not see the good works, personalities like Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong are bringing to the party. I do not understand why the party will still want to use the old goods that failed to win them power in both the 2008 and 2012 Presidential elections. Was Nana Akomea not the Director of Communication, when the party lost in 2012, if he had something good to offer, he will have done that in 2012.
Why am I not surprised, because the party after failing twice decides to throw in the Grandpa to go into a contest with his son?
I wonder how the political future of Kwabena Agyepong, will be like, it is obvious from the utterances and actions of Nana Addo and his loyalists that he is going to have a hard time doing his job. He is the choice of the delegates, but Nana Addo is hell bent on making him irrelevant in the scheme of things. In which political party, does a Communication Director more powerful than the General Secretary?
When campaigning start probably next year, Kwabena Agyepong, will be assigned a role of an armchair General Secretary.
