The choice of Peter Mac-Manu as Campaign Manager for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2016 presidential candidate, Addo Akufo-Addo, has been delayed by the twice defeated Presidential candidate, because of issues of ill-health.

The Herald, can report that, Mr. Mac-Manu, the former Chairman and Ejisu born politician from the Ashanti Region, has been battling ill-health in recent times. Many suspect diabetes as they pointed to his strange eating habit and continuous loss of weight in recent times, and nasal sound, when he speaks. Party observers say, Mr. Mac- Manu, has been looking frail lately.

The reports say, Mr. Mac-Manu, has been commuting from Accra to Johannesburg, in search of remedy for his ill-health.

The reports add that, Mr. Mac-Manu was in South Africa few days ago, seeking medical treatment for his deteriorating health.
This is said to have delayed the announcement from the party’s flagbearer as his Campaign Manager for the 2016 Presidential Elections. The announcement was to have been made, after the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

The Herald is reliably informed that, members of the Nana Addo’s “kitchen cabinet” are worried about the state in which Mr Mac-Manu finds himself, hence the delay in his announcement as the leader of the 2016 campaign.

As if to shut up speculators, the ex-NPP National Chairman yesterday, announced his presence in the country by appearing on an Accra based, Asempa FM’s afternoon socio-political show hosted by Kwadwo Baffour Acheampong (KABA) to demand a fresh voter register.

Mr Mac-Manu, speaking on the quest by the NPP to have the Electoral Commission (EC) to compile a new voters’ register during the interview, sounded nasal in his delivery, clearly indicating he was recuperating or battling a health condition. Many say, he is visibly unwell for the stressful and vigorous job of a 2016 Campaign Manager for a party in opposition requiring a laborious footwork.

As if the health issues are not enough and a headache to Nana Addo, his family and friends, as well as some party insiders, are raising questions about the depth of Nana Akufo-Addo’s political astuteness, and his ability to recapture power, having twice failed to achieve that.

Many feel Mr. Mac-Manu is not suitable for the position especially so, when he failed as NPP National Chairman to make Nana Addo president in 2008. They will prefer a more dynamic personality like Dan Botwe, who is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Okere in the Eastern Region

Those opposing Mr. Mac-Manu, argues that he together with General Secretary, Nana Ohene- Ntow, in 2008 sent the party into opposition, despite an overwhelming incumbency advantage, backed by a heavy dose of cash, running into millions of United States Dollars.

They could not fathom why Nana Addo, will ignore the very popular, Dan Kweku Botwe, for the position of the 2016 Campaign Manager and settle on a failure like Peter Mac-Manu, who already has an issue with current General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong, and National Chairman, Paul Afoko, for preventing him from leading discussions with Electoral Commission (EC), as far as the electoral reforms are concern.

Unlike, Peter Mac-Manu, Mr. Botwe, they pointed, had twice won election for the NPP as General Secretary in 2001 and 2004, respectively with the NPP presidential candidate, John Agyekum Kufuor.

They described, Dan Botwe, as an affable person, who is liked by many, hence his two successes at the Okere Constituency of Eastern Region on the ticket of the NPP as a legislator.

Additionally, they were of the view that, the ex-General Secretary, could bring all the feuding factions involved in the internal wrangling together for the party’s victory at the 2016 polls, in spite of their differences.

Mr Mac-Manu, they maintained, was the leader of the party when seventeen flagbearer aspirants, including Nana Addo, lined up to contest the party’s flagbearership slot in 2007 at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana, Legon in Accra.
Until his election as the National Chairman of the party, he was the Western Regional chairman, and it was during his stewardship as national chairman that “family and friends” of Nana Addo, took over the running of the party.

As a leader, he sat aloof for the likes of Nana Addo’s cousin, Gabby Asare Otchere Darko, owner of Data Bank Financial Services, Ken Ofori Atta, and Edward Boateng, owner of Global Media Alliance (GMA), operators of Accra-based Happy FM, Y FM and E.TV Ghana among others, to call the shots in the party.

It was even speculated in 2008 that, they cooked some research reports that suggested that, Nana Addo, was winning the presidential election by 54 percent and distributed campaign logistics.

The Herald has learnt that, Nana Addo’s decision to settle on the failed national chairman was as a result of the choice of his “family and friends” who are mainly members of his “Kitchen Cabinet”.

The former Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Kofi Konadu Appraku and Kyeremanten Agyarko, were made campaign managers in 2008 and 2012 respectively by these same allies of the flagbearer.

It was under the stewardship of these two gentlemen that, the “family and friends” of the flagbearer, borrowed over GH¢2 million from Prudential Bank to invest in the fortunes of the party, as well as bought several cross-country vehicles in a withholding company reportedly owned by Ken Ofori-Atta and the Data Bank.

The Okere MP, was made Minister for Information and later removed from government by ex-president Kufuor in a reshuffle for standing his grounds, and separating the NPP and Kufuor government from Kufuor’s family affairs when the Hotel Kufuor saga broke.

The information coming from close allies of the flagbearer say, the “family and friends” refused to accept the appointment of Mr Botwe, because he is forthright and will not afford them the opportunity to run affairs the way they did under Dr. Apraku and Mr. Agyarko.

Another reason the “family and friends” assigned for disapproving the appointment of Mr. Botwe was that, he has ambition to lead the party after Nana Addo’s exits as leader, besides he does not respect Nana Addo, and does not believe his chances at becoming president, The Herald was told.

They are also of the view that, appointing him as the leader for the 2016 campaign; Dan Botwe, will use his position to set up a network of party campaign financiers, who will subsequently finance his presidential ambition after ditching Nana Addo.

Dan Botwe is also accused of gross disrespect to the “family and friends” of Nana Addo, hence the choice of Peter Mac-Manu as Campaign Manager has been put on hold.
