The former Minister for Water Resources Works and Housing, Alhaji Abubakar Saddique Boniface, has vehemently rebuffed the claims that, he is part of a group of disgruntled party stalwarts pursuing the a divisive agenda dubbed, “agenda 2020” to blight the fortunes of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate in the 2016 elections.
Alhaji Boniface, who is running for the June 13, NPP parliamentary primary for Madina Constituency in the Greater Accra region, made this comment on an Accra based Peace FM’s evening political programme.
He said the only agenda he has as a member of the party and a Parliamentary aspirant was to make sure Nana Addo wins the 2016 presidential election.
What is paramount to me and members of my campaign team is to make Nana Addo president, while I re -enters the August house again.
He indicated Mr Paul Afoko, the National Chairman of the party, has always been his senior brother, while the General Secretary , Mr Kwabena Agyepong his mate back in the Kwame Nkrumah University of Technology (KNUST), so he cannot deny him, because of politics.
He was quick to add that he cannot let politics override his friendship with people he had known for ages.
He assured the rank and file of the party to ignore rumours making the rounds, claiming he had lived in the Madina area for the past thirty years and his neighbours can testify to all this.
Early, this paper learnt of reports that the decision for the executives to make overtures to the former MP to contest on their Constituency ticket stem from the fact that, he had decided not to contest the 2016 parliamentary election on the ticket of Salaga Constituency.
In January, Alhaji Abubakar Saddique Boniface, held a meeting at the party’s office in Salaga, the ancient slave city of the Northern region and in attendance at the said meeting were elders, patrons, founding fathers and the Constituency executives, excluding the current Constituency Chairman.
The meeting, according to sources was chaired by the Vice Chairman, Alhaji Ussif Alabi.
At the said meeting, this paper learnt that the former MP with a heavy heart informed them that he was not interested in contesting the Salaga seat.
At the meeting, he tasked the executives to start searching for a formidable candidate who can wrestle the seat from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The decision this paper learnt, did not go down well with the executives gathered at the meeting, but it later came to the fore that, the man has made his decision and there was no way he could be convinced to eat back his words.
However, some NPP executives, are elated over Salaga ‘ s loss and are yearning for Alhaji Abubakar Saddique Boniface to contest on the ticket of the above mentioned Constituencies.
The two time MP, who rose through the ranks starting as a Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry to a Cabinet Minister of Works and Housing after serving as the Northern Regional Minister and later the Minister for Manpower, Employment and Development in the first and second term of the NPP.
This paper can further report that the NPP executives in the Biokoye are also lobbying the former MP to contest as a Guan and of Gonja descent, claiming he has root in the Constituency.
According to them, the former MP, calls the former National Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress, Dr Kwabena Adjei ,as a distant uncle.
In Ashanti region this paper learnt that the MP in his days as a student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Technology (KNUST) was active in the activities of the
Zongo areas in the Kumasi metropolis.
The executives of the Madina Constituency, are also contending that Alhaji Boniface as he is affectionately called, has lived in the area and has properties with his wife Hajia Rabi, who operates a supermarket in the area, so he stand a better chance of contesting as per the Electoral Commission’s rules governing elections, one of the Executive contend.
