Ghana: Ahafo Ano South Health Insurance Embarks On Free Registration

he Ahafo Ano South District Office of National Health Insurance Authority, in collaboration with 17 facilities, has taken a step in subsidising the cost and charges of those who are interested in registering with the scheme.

It has subsequently, embarked upon the free registration of the poor, vulnerable, disabled and physically challenged, including school children, whose parents cannot afford the registration.

Mr. Douglas Adom Kwakye, District Manager of the scheme, who disclosed this to Ashanti File at Mankranso in the Ashanti Region, revealed that through the intervention the district was able to reach its target in the first and second quarters of this year, with a record 65% to 70% increase in registered clients of the 179 communities.

Mr. Kwakye appealed to the members of parliament, district chief executive, non-governmental organisations, corporate bodies and philanthropists in the district to also assist the poor and vulnerable in the area, by registering them, to enable them also benefit from the scheme as their social responsibility and to make the scheme attractive to clients.

The Scheme Manager advised clients to avoid acts that had the tendency to kill the programme, but instead, help the service providers to maintain the scheme for the benefit of the Ghanaian citizenry.

He bemoaned the situation where clients fail to renew their health insurance when due, and wait until they fall sick.

Mr. Kwakye pointed out that the wrong perception by the public that the scheme was no longer functional had become a big challenge to the service providers.
