Journalists Slapped And Sacked From Ablekuma South
The monthly dose of confusion in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was yesterday, recorded at Chorkor in Accra, when a group of young men led by the Constituency Chairman for Ablekuma South, chased out journalists, who were there to cover a press conference by respected party stalwart, Ato Quarshie, amid gunshots.
Mr. Quarshie, a man in his 80s, known to the NPP rank and file, had invited the journalists to a press conference to air his views about happenings in the party, which has claimed two lives, injured many, and the destruction of properties, including cars and motorbikes.
Whilst, preparations were underway for the press conference, the Constituency Chairman, Kofi Asante, accompanied by a group of angry young men, stormed the venue scattering and breaking plastic chairs, the sound systems, as well as canopies, amid the gunshots.
They also assaulted some journalists, before ordering them to leave the area immediately. It was indeed, another confrontation between Nana Akufo-Addo’s loyalists and the pro-Afoko group.
A television cameraman from one of the television stations was slapped, with his camera almost destroyed, as he attempted to capture the chaotic scenes.
Mr. Asante, had demanded to know why a press conference was being organized in the name of the party without recourse to the NPP Constituency Executives. The event was eventually called off as a result of the chaos.
The 1st Vice-Chairman of the party in the Constituency, Nii Lantey, was quoted on Joy FM as saying, no member of the Executive was aware of Attoh Quarshie’s press conference. He could not understand why an elder of the party, would hold a press conference without informing Constituency Executives, whose duty it is to manage the affairs of the NPP in the Constituency.
To exert authority and discipline in the Constituency, he said the youth in the Constituency, mobilised themselves to stop any unauthorized event in the name of the party.
“There is authority in Ablekuma South Constituency,” Nii Lantey insisted, “so we quickly put our arsenal together to call this programme off.”
But Mr. Ato Quarshie explained that, he was only about to issue a press statement in his personal capacity. Despite his explanation, Mr. Asante, vehemently opposed the idea and ordered his boys to scatter the programme.
Mr. Kofi Asante, the Ablekuma South Constituency Chairman, also in an interview with Citi News, said Mr. Quarshie, was a known critic of the NPP’s 2016 flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, and that he was going to use his press conference to create more division in the party.
He said, Mr. Quarshie was also known to be against the candidature of the Ablekuma South Parliamentary Candidate, Lawyer Jerry Ahmed.
However, the elderly Mr. Quarshie, told Citi News, he has been a staunch member of the party and was genuinely concerned about its progress, adding that the NPP’s current challenges, have been largely fuelled by Nana Akufo-Addo.
He accused Nana Addo of being behind the suspension of Mr. Paul Afoko as the National Chairman, and asked him to either unite the party and work with everyone else or leave the party for someone else to lead them.
The NPP has been going through turbulent times which are largely blamed on perceived divisions which culminated into the death of its Upper East Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama, and recently, Abubakar Saddique, who was killed in the Asawase Constituency, allegedly by some members of the party.
The party has experienced similar chaotic scenes in some parts of the country and mostly at its Headquarters in recent times.
