The next general elections is more than a year away, but the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Awutu Senya West Constituency, George Nenyi Andah, is already flexing muscles, claiming he is not afraid of the stiff competition the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) likely contender, GizellaTetteh poses.
Mr Andah, who is a Deputy Communications Minister, says he will on any day beat her, because Ms Tetteh, who happens to be the younger sister of the former MP, Hannah Tetteh, poses no threat whatsoever to his bid to return to Parliament in January 2021.
But some say, the utterances of the first time lawmaker, is one borne out of fear and panic and not the case that he holds any superior record within the four years on the seat to beat stiff competition from anyone, including Eugene Arhin, President Akufo-Addo’s Director of Communications.
Reacting to news of GizellaTetteh picking forms for the contest on GhOne television, Mr Andah, said he was unperturbed, because he has even beaten her more experienced and powerful sister, Hannah Tetteh, who is the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi, Kenya.
The Deputy Minister, who was on the show with colleague MP for Odododiodio, Nii Lante Vanderpujie, said he would have loved to contest the wife of his colleague, who may have a better strategist in her husband than Gizella.
“You are saying that I beat Hannah Tetteh or we beat Hannah Tetteh, who was a Foreign Affairs Minister, who was a Cabinet Minister ok, who was an incumbent and her younger sister coming into politics is a threat?
With all due respect, NDC, has to come up with somebody for all the parliamentary candidates that have presented themselves; I don’t see anybody apart from Gizzala, who will win the primaries.
So I am very certain that, Gizella will win the primaries, I would have wished that his wife would have come, if his wife came, I would have probably said that she is a stiffer competition because he is a strategist and he is an MP.
But if with all due respect, a sitting MP, who was a Cabinet Minister, who was a Foreign Affairs Minister ok, we beat her, why should I worry about her younger sister,” he asked hostess Serwaah Amihere, during the GhOne television’s newspaper review segment of it morning show recently.
According to him “There is no issue.Listen, the issue is that there is no message and I am very confident that as far as the Awutu Senya West Constituency is concerned, there are three main issues even if I close my eyes and I am given a piece of paper to write what are the issues there, it will be consistent—–Bawjiase Swedru road, Bawjiase Market and the Senya Landing Beach…..that is going to address the concerns of the electorates of Awutu Senya West”.
He went further to take a jabat the former MP saying her record was nothing to build on by her sister adding her achievement is so poor that even a road leading to her house was never done during her tenure. MrAndah was however quick to add that the NPP will not be contented with it achievementsso far but will continue to work hard to be retained.
“The road in front Hanna Tetteh’s house, Gizella house to the Abrakyire secondary school, ask they were not able to do that road in eight years that you were in power ok and you say that you are coming out with ideas to come and overthrow the NPP for crying out loud let us not get worried.
Listen, it’s a democracy, we will not be complacent, I will not call her a novice as her sister called me, we will go on the ground, we will continue doing the work and we know we will continue to deliver on the expectations of Ghanaians.
Listen, everyone has to be careful like Sir John said you have to fear delegates anything can happen, so I am not saying that it’s impossible ok but I am saying that,if you look at the facts on the ground and you look at what we are doing as far as the electorates are concerned, it is highly unlikely that there will be a surprise.
The NDC, has commenced preparation to elect aspirants for the 2020 elections.
Vetting has began and in the Awutu Senya West Constituency alone, some three parliamentary hopefuls, including another lady, will be battling it out with MsTetteh, who is nursing the ambition to step in the shoes of her elder sister after the seat was snatched from her in the 2016 elections by Mr Andah.
The three are Joseph Tetteh, Gabriel Quaye and Georgia Dadson. As stated by Mr Andah, Ms Tetteh, is likely to win the primaries, but is unclear how the general election is going to pan out.
Mr Andah, a communication expert, who once worked with telecommunication giant MTN,on the other hand is expected to face tough competition from his own party, which has also started the process leading to the conduct of the primaries for orphan constituencies in the mean time.
Some have said before thinking about who is contesting in the NDC, Mr Andah, has a bigger task ahead of him in his own party.
Not much has been heard about who may contest him at the NPP primaries, but The Herald, has gathered that within government, Spokesperson at the presidency, Eugene Arhin, may battle for that same seat, having the support of the Presidency behind him.
In May this year, Mr Arhin, donated to the Muslims community in Awutu Bawjiase, a gesture which is often done to subtly announce politicians dream to go to Parliament.
