The devil they say finds job for the idle hand, and he has found one for a willing and able Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko.
Everyone in Ghana and even visitors to this country, know the influence Gabby has in this administration, his contribution for the victory of his cousin, Nana Akufo-Addo is never in doubt.
He has been with the man since day and has fallen on so many swords in the agenda for Akufo-Addo for president.
Since the birth of the administration, every notable single member of the family, who were in the forefront of realizing Akufo-Addo’s dream, has taken a bite at the cherry by getting appointment, Gabby cleverly decided not to accept any official responsibility.
He has thus arrogated himself as the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the president on facebook or if you may social media minister, making the list of ministers 111.
People usually don’t talk when their mouths are full, but not Gabby, he just can’t keep his mouth shut and his itchy fingers to himself.
He has commented on issues of governance, given clues about government intention, and taking on ministers and appointees of the president, including his latest attack on the energy minister, Boakye Agyarko.
His comments, have not gone without controversy, the latest was when he tested public reaction, about the intention of the government to increase the Value Added Tax, from 17.5 percent to 21percent.
Before the mid-year budget review, he took to facebook to ask whether Ghanaians, would be okay with an increase in the VAT.
He wrote ““will you support a VAT increase to keep your lights on, your secondary schools filled, your school kids fed, your streets clean, your streets safe, young graduates employed, and decent, affordable homes built for working families?.”
The post generated lots of response, bottom line being that Ghanaians were against it. The former president, John Dramani Mahama, was not spared by Gabby, when he also decided to wade into the suggestion. Gabby, who can’t keep his mouth shut, asked the former president to shush.
I did not know that, when president Akufo-Addo promised to make Accra the cleanset city in Africa, he was going to increase VAT, in order to be able to achieve that feat.
That angst that the suggestion generated was enough for the Finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta to beat retreat, but not before he told the Minority Members of Parliament (MP), who had earlier held a press conference to serve notice to the government not to contemplate any move, to stop taking economic policy directions from facebook.
Ken should have also admonished his cousin to also stop posting government intentions on facebook.
Indeed, there is no smoke without fire, Gabby is so close to power that, we cannot take what he writes, as someone, who has nothing doing and is bored that, whatever he writes is a figment of his imagination.
Last week, he made the headlines again, when he posted on facebook that “If you are a minister, or any appointee for that matter, with a greater ambition, please learn from Akufo-Addo when he was in your position. He focused on delivering on the work assigned to him by the President. He would not be distracted. He did not let his ambition get in the way of his job; not even how to fund his future campaign. Be loyal and committed to the mandate you have today. Let the success of the government you are a big part of today be the only thing that matters today. Guard and Guide your integrity as if it is your only source of oxygen. When the time comes the party will remember you and your ethics and reward you for the services rendered to the government when you were gifted the opportunity to serve”.
Gabby is now the one to set the standard for ministers’ behavior, he is whipping those he feel are not bowing to his whims in line and calling them out to shame on social media.
There is no command and control in this government, it is coming clear by the day, with the display of his frustration and daily dose of corruption cases that, nobody is in charge.
The president himself at 74, expected of his age is certainly sleeping on the job and nobody is stepping up to take control.
His newspaper the Daily Statesman, claimed that, the president was misled in given the executive order for the Ameri novation agreement.
This is the joke of the century, assuming the president was misled, what about the executive secretary, who signed the letter.
Gabby and his people think, we wash our faces upside down, a deal they cooked to flee our money has only gone bad.
In his latest post, the dagger this time fell on Isaac Adongo, Member of Parliament for Bolga Central, for having the nerves to attack his cousin and finance minister, accusing him of collapsing Unibank, in order for his financial institution, Databank to profit from it.
Gabby wrote “Adongo, I’m reliably informed, was a student of Ace Kojo Ankomah. Blame it on his teacher who failed to teach his student the difference between an investment bank and a universal or commercial bank. Blame Ace for not teaching Adongo that High Street banks in fact go to investment banks for money and that the two rather complement each other and are not straight competitors”.
Isaac Adongo, should know that, where God sits to cook his ampesi, is the same place the devil also roast his slated fish.
