The Ghana Free Zones Board (GFZ) on Thursday September 12, 2013 donated GH¢20,000.00 as sponsorship, in aid of the 29th National Farmers’ Day Celebration.
The aim of this gesture was to motivate farmers, whose farm produce are the source of raw materials for free zone companies, who are into agro processing.
Agro-processing is one of the priority sectors where free zones companies can operate by adding value to farm produce and other cash crops by way of processing for export. There are 246 companies registered under the Free Zones programme. About 55 companies out of this total number are into agro-processing. The area of processing are :
Cocoa processors include, ADM Cocoa, Plot Enterprise, Cargill Gh, Commodity Processing Industries
Shea Nuts processors include, 3F Ghana Limited, PBC Shea Limited, Shebu Industries Limited
Cashew Nuts processors include, Ghana Specialty Fats Industries, Ghana Nuts Company
Fruit Processing Companies include, Blue Skies, Koranco farms, Golden Exotics, Peelco LTD
Palm Oil processing companies include, Food Processors Int, Ghana Oil Palm Development Co, Eco Logistics
These companies and their varied areas of operation so far as Agro Processing is concerned, are the motivation behind the sponsorship of the 29th National Farmers’ Day celebration. The value addition and subsequent export of 70 per cent or more of their processed products go a long way to help Ghana’s GDP in terms of helping to balance our trade deficits.
Ghana is an agrarian economy. Agriculture has been the mainstay and the backbone of the nation’s growth and development. Farmers have contributed immensely to Ghana’s development as well as the sustenance of Ghanaians. They therefore need to be motivated to work hard to provide the raw materials that will feed these free zones companies for subsequent processing for export.
