The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), has raised alarm on the distribution and sale of fake dewormer medicine tablet, Zentel, on the Ghanaian market.
The FDA, through its post-market surveillance, found the said fake Zentel in some shops in Accra, and it Laboratory analysis revealed that it contained no active ingredient that kill worms in the human body.
A statement signed by the Chief Executive of the FDA, Hudu Mogtari, named locations and shops where the fake medicines were found as Christiana E Obeng Chemical Shop – Madina, Nascota Pharmacy – Madina and Rapnet Pharmacy – Lapaz.
Zentel tablets are indicated for the treatment of worm infestations.
It had its batch number as 390160, manufacturing date as 03/11 and expiry date as 03/16 as features on the boxes containing the medicine.
Mr. Mogtari’s statement mentioned Medreich Sterilab Limited, Avalahalli, Bangalore-560062 of India as the manufacturer of the fake dewormer.
Apart from the above mentioned manufacturer’s address, the Fake Zentel has another address as “SmithKline Beecham Laboratories Pharmaceutiques 6, Esplanade Charles de Gaulie, 62731 NANTERRE, Cedex, France which is also inscribed on the original product.
“Pharmacies, Licensed Chemical Shops, Hospitals, Clinics and all other health facilities, having stocks of the Zentel with the above-mentioned batch number (390160) are advised to immediately handover those products to any of the FDA offices countrywide”, the FDA boss warned.
The statement asked “the general public, especially pharmacies, licensed chemical shops, hospitals, clinics and other healthcare facilities are hereby cautioned against buying medicines from drug peddlers and other dubious sources”.
It added “medicines purchased from these sources could be fake and could have their quality compromised by the manner in which they are transported and stored, which could result in their deterioration well before their stated expiry”.
