The first Private Medical School in Ghana, Family Health Medical School, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Michigan, to help train and groom students of the medical school.
The purpose of the MOU was to promote cooperation in medical education and Scientific Research between the Regents of University of Michigan, located in Ann Arbor, Michigan’ United States of America (USA), and Family Health Medical School, located in Accra, Ghana.
Areas of cooperation between the two schools are; joint research projects, Exchange of academic publications, Sharing of experiences in innovative teaching methods, symposia, workshops and conferences, student exchange programmes among others.
University of Michigan founded in 1817, as public research university is considered as one of the foremost research Universities in the United States.
The University offers comprehensive graduate programme such as doctorate degrees in the humanities, Social Sciences and (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
Michigan University further offers professional degrees in architecture, business, medicine, law, pharmacy, nursing, social work, public health, and dentistry.
On the other hand, Family Health Medical School, is the teaching arm of Family Health Hospital. It is the First Private Medical School in Ghana.
The vision of the school is to be the prime centre for professional medical education and training in the advancement of human health in the country.
Family Health Medical School is affiliated to the University of Ghana and accredited by the National Accreditation Board (NAB).
The school lecturers and professors comprise of both national and international in collaborations with other medical schools in America, Europe and Asia.
Family Health Medical School has modern facilities such as the Tim Johnson Library Complex with a lot of unique tools for learning including; telemedicine facilities, an E-library, spacious hall of Anatomy (among the biggest in the sub region) for the dissection of Cadavers and
Computerized Facilities to view different parts of the human body.
The school also has well-equipped laboratories for Physiology and Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Chemical Pathology.
It has anIntracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) equipment for the study of embryology (Anatomy), the only one in a medical school in Ghana.
Others are, WiFi hot spots all over the compound, on-site hospital (Family Health Hospital).
Family Health Medical School during its inauguration, was privileged to have two former Presidents, Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kuffour and President, John Dramani Mahama, graced the occasion last month.
The President of Family Health Group, Prof. Kwawukume and Medical Director of Family Health Hospital, signed on behalf of Family Health Medical School, whiles Prof. Timothy R.B.Johnson, also signed for University of Michigan.
