As the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is putting its house in order to save Ghanaians from the shackles of this clueless government, one person that the party must distance itself from is Ekwow Spio- Garbrah.
To any fair minded observer to the NDC flagbearership contest playing out, there is no denying the fact that, apart from the eventual winner president John Dramani Mahama, Spio stands tall among the rest making the numbers.
Before I enumerate my reasons, why I think Spio-Garbrah, is not the best option for the party, either as a candidate or as a running mate as some, have suggested, let me confess that, I am not supporting any of the persons, who have expressed interest to contest for the flagbearership of the party.
I only feel this is a most auspicious time to express one’s views to enable the delegates of the party, make informed decision before it is too late.
It is equally important because the decision they will be making, will either see Ghana descend further into the current endless abyss or a new dawn of prosperity and progress.
To be honest, there are a few good materials among the aspirants. Prof. Joshua Alabi is experienced, matured, calm and can make a good president.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Nadawli West and Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, is a seasoned politician, having served successfully both in the Legislature and Executive arms of government, has what it takes to move the nation forward. Goosie Tanoh, similarly is very intelligent and has what it takes to govern Ghana.
The odd one out is Ekow Spio Garbrah, who has never hidden his intention and ambition to govern this country. Even when the odds were against him in favour of the late president, John Evans Atta Mills, he threw in his hat to contest him, but lost miserably.
In desperation to actualize his ambition, Spio Garbrah, is also taking the high road the current president took, making promises, as though they have a lifetime to govern the country.
He is promising virtually everything to almost everybody who cares to listen.
He has outlined seven strategic pillars to strengthen the NDC and make it attractive to win power in the 2020 general elections, without telling us how, which is critical.
In that seven point agenda, he promised to find an afternoon every week to spend time with party members and chair meetings at the party office, this is ridiculous to the say the least. The pressures of the presidency, will not allow anyone time to even contemplate such an idea, unless he has no idea, what it takes to govern a nation.
He also said under his leadership, a human capacity development through a lifelong mentorship initiative would be established to guide young party members in the areas including legal, medicine, construction, trade, industry finance, communication and media.
Spio-Garbrah, is one of the most arrogant human beings because he has forgotten that what destroyed the Devil himself was arrogance. Since when did he become a team player to recognize that, the party has talent and he can tap into.
He has also promised to establish a credit union for the party to strengthen its financial capacity. This is the promises, he is making to members of the NDC, what he will serve the generality of Ghanaians, only God can stop him.
Any talkative is a liar, anybody who sees opportunity in every situation cannot be trusted. The NDC risks extending their days in opposition, should Spio-Garbrah be considered for any position in the party.
Ghanaians are witnessing, the result of promises. President Akufo-Addo, promised them everything under the sun, his running mate and now vice-president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, was the one who led the charge. He was comfortably in the front row, dishing out promises and telling us how bad the John Dramani Mahama was.
In their inordinate desire for power, they promised anything that came into their mind and we are where we are today under this hardship never experienced before in this country.
One can say with certainty that Spio-Garbrah has no political base, even his home region voted against the NDC in 2016, despite the massive infrastructure development.
When he contested against Prof. Mills, in 2007, Spio- Grabrah described himself as David, who had come to rescue the Israelites, that did not work for him.
Years later, he has graduated or arrogated to himself the title of the messiah. How far is this man willing to go, just to be close to the presidency?
They are calls within certain quarters that, he should be made the running mate to John Dramani Mahama, aside his misplaced ambition, this will be the worse decision the party will take.
We don’t want another Bawumia on our hands.
