The Chinese Government, through its Embassy in Accra, has assisted Ghana to build a Cardiac Catheterization laboratory otherwise known as ‘Cath Lab’ for the Korle –Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), to help investigate all cardiovascular diseases before surgeries are embarked upon in the country.
The Catheterization laboratory, one of the expensive laboratories for investigating all heart diseases before surgeries are done, was installed by Ghanaians with the assistance of the Guangzhou Province Cardiovascular Institute.
The Cardiothoracic Centre, has been in existence over the past 24 years and has grown into a mini-hospital complex, able to function independently when the need arises, but without a Cath. Laboratory.
The laboratory is expected to be inaugurated soon by the President, John Dramani Mahama; Dr Lawrence Sereboe, Director of the National Cardiothoracic Centre at Korle-Bu, has said.
Dr Sereboe, made this announcement when a team from the Guangzhou Cardiovascular Institute in China, presented disposable cutlasses worth one hundred and fifty thousand Dollars.
Dr Sereboe, stated that the disposable cutlasses are very important tools that ensure smooth operation in the Cath. laboratory.
He said, the items are used to block and unblock the blood vessel during patient’s investigations in the laboratory.
The laboratory is one of the flag ship equipment being introduced in the country to aid the work cardiovascular surgeons.
He commended the Chinese government for helping to put up two of these laboratories in the country one at Korle-Bu in Accra and One at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in the Ashanti region.
He further thanked the President, John Dramani Mahama, for the support he had shown to the project.
He disclosed that, the President went further by donating all the donations that were made available to him when his mother passed to the operations of the centre.
We look forward to seeing the President come and inaugurated the centre for it to start full operations.
Speaking on behalf of the Chinese Ambassador, Mrs Sun Baohong; Mr. Jiang Li, a commercial Officer at the Embassy, said China would implement ten cooperation plans with Africa in the next three years, including industrialization, agriculture modernization, financial and green development.
He said, China has decided to provide a total of 60 billion Dollars of financial support as part of the new China-Africa cooperation.
He maintained that Ghana and China, have had a long standing relationship in health cooperation and the cooperation, has offered a new opportunity for public health.
