A good leader does not set out to create fear and panic among his people, a good and responsible leader is one who even in the midst of crisis will tell his people that things will get better and that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
When Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia said at the Central University that Government was going to go to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), for bail-out, he said nothing new, it is not that the obvious decision to take was not known to the Government, but that in office, one needs to look at all the options available, before taking any decision that could have consequences, if any on the governed
‘Na who cause am’ is a phrase in pidgin English that we use to denote so many things, it is also a circumstantial phrase, used by many and for all sorts of reasons. In simple English it means ‘who caused it’.
So when I asked who caused it, for Dr. Bawumia to have the impudence and the bravado to throw his weight around, going round the country blowing his trumpet as if he is the best economist this country can boast of.
This same gentleman in his PHD Thesis, wrote on the economic theory espoused by former President Jerry John Rawlings, the architects of that module are still around and can still make meaningful contribution to the ailing economy.
So I ask again, na who cause am? It is no longer a matter of rocket science, the answer is before us every day, we are dealing with two disaster of individuals foisted on us by the appointing authourity and so I bring to you, Seth Terkper, Minister of Finance and Economic Planning and the Governor of Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Henry Wampah, why they are still in office is the most difficult of all the questions.
In any civilized society, these gentlemen will have done the honourable thing of quitting, before they are pushed, but in Ghana where we worship and adore incompetence, they will carry their shoulders high and lead us all into a ditch.
It strikes me that no one ever says sorry in Ghana, I mean tell when a Ghanaian leader or Minister past or present, even in the future said, “I am sorry it was my fault, I caused it, I could do better, I took the wrong counsel or gave the wrong diagnosis of a problem”.
I am struggling to understand, why or what is it that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia knows that people appointed at the crucial time of our economy, do not know.
I trust in the judgement of President, John Dramani Mahama, it was the reason why despite the temptation to vote for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), I voted for John Mahama, and I have no regret for that. That trust is what is letting me think that when he is still confident of his Finance Minister, I am tempted to go along with him, but the signs are so nebulous that I am having to question my own trust and whether it is a blind one.
I am not old, but in my young adult life, I have never heard a sitting President, publicly against the pressures brought to bear on him to change his appointee, repose so much confidence in his appointee and say “I will not change him”. This is what President Mahama did when the Managing Director of a bank visited him at the Flagstaff House, he told her, pressure from within and without his political party is been brought on him to change his Finance Minister, but he will not budge to the pressures.
I thought as a communicator, the President will choose his words carefully and know when to say what and when to keep quiet, but some of his utterances have come back to bite him.
After all the public show of support for his Finance Minister, how can he turn around and fire him, but if the circumstances have changed, it is only fair to Ghanaians that he relieve the man of his post, after all it is only a fool who does not change his mind.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is seen as a financial whiz kid, an economic guru, a new kid on the block, by members of the NPP and some Ghanaians, when the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has the men and women, who are by far more competent and qualified than him.
A friend made an analogy of what is happening to the economy to a man whose car is stuck in the mud, even women, will teach him how to drive, that is what is happening to the Government.
Seth Terkper is so ‘incompetent’ to the extent that even small boys, who do not understand what demand and supply is in economics have all become experts in how to run an economy.
Why is Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the twice defeated Presidential candidate of the NPP so confident of winning the 2016 elections, the answer is that with Seth Terkper at the Finance Ministry, his work is cut out for him, because the man does not have any surprises up his sleeves again, as far as resuscitating the ailing economy is concern.
What new ideas does the man have, he has exhausted all the tricks in the book, his is like an old wine in a new bottle, and his last dance is taking too long to come.
So all the stories and commentaries making the rounds that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is vindicated have gotten it all wrong, it is our Finance Minister and the Governor of BoG, who have failed the President and the good people of this country.
