The Director of Election for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has asked Ghanaians to ignore the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako alias “Chairman Wontumi” for claiming he financially influenced the defeat of some NDC Parliamentary aspirants at last weekend’s primaries, because he lacks substance.

But vociferous NDC stalwart based in Kumasi, AfrifaYamoah Ponkoh, has discounted Mr Ankrah’s admonition, saying some NDC executives are not living up to the mark, because most of them are on the payroll of Chairman Wontumi, a known “Galamsey Chief”.
Mr Yamoah Ponkoh, observed that these persons, whom he refused to name are the same executives the party expects to work with ahead of the 2020 elections wondering what results they can produce with such a conduct.
“Wontumi is really working and he is somebody to be feared. As we speak we have some NDC Executives who are on his payroll. He pays them, he services them…he does so many things for them. Some of them are holding enviable positions in the party and Wontumi is taking care of them. So if he comes out to say during the NDC parliamentary primaries he used money to influence the outcome, I won’t be surprise “, he disclosed on Kumasi-based Pure FM.
The Former Municipal Chief Executive [MCE] for Ejisu/Juaben, is quoted by MyNewsGh.com.as saying “I do not fear him but he is a zerious guy who must not be underrated at all. To me NPP has gotten a very good Chairman who understands what he is doing. A very workable Chairman who is toiling for his party”
He cautioned the NDC against downplaying any move by the NPP executive as it has the potential as spelling their doom in the region if they fail to tread cautiously.
Asked by host Kwame Adinkra, why he has refused to allow his name be put on the payroll of Chairman Wontumi, he responded” I am dealing with principles but others are dealing with money. I have not seen such money but even if you give me such money I will spend and do what is expected of me. If Wontumi said he says he has used money to influence NDC elections then it is true. This is what is expected of a hardworking Chairman”.
Mr Ankrah, had asked Ghanaians to treat with contempt the comments made by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP on it’s recently held parliamentary primaries.
He Described it as ‘ridiculous and preposterous’ the possibility of Chairman Wontumi’s meddling in the NDC’s parliamentary primaries, as well as previous elections.
Chairman Wontumi, had said that he orchestrated the defeat of Ras Mubarak in the Kumbungu primary, claiming that he paid monies directly to delegates and key persons to teach Mr Mubarak a lesson, because he is “too loud.”
“As for the other strategies, I cannot say them on air. When you look at Ras Mubarak for instance, considering how loud he is, we decided to teach him a lesson. All that is in our hands and in our interest as well. When they were going to elect their national executives, we told them we wanted people we can work with. In politics, you must know the weakness of your opponent and take advantage of them and so you help them choose a candidate. This is something that we have done and so in 2020 Nana Addo will retain the seat”, he claimed.
But on the Point of View on Wednesday, Mr Ankrah, told the host of the show, Bernard Avle that Wontumi’s comments are extremely hilarious, unserious and must be rejected.
“Let’s not bring the comedy, I don’t take him (seriously) with all due respect. That’s ridiculous and preposterous. When we were going to do our regional elections, he said he was going to choose our chairman for us and all that… Let’s leave the comedy.”
Earlier, Ras Mubarak, had indicated that his defeat was as a result of vote-buying by his opponent.
But days later, Mr Mubarak said “if he [Wontumi] is claiming to be the unseen hands who orchestrated my defeat, I leave everything to God. I live to fight another day.”
