The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region, has hit back at the three times presidential candidate of the largest opposition group, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, for describing the governing party’s quest to gunner one million votes in that region in 2016 as a “mere mirage”.
According to the NDC, the 2012 presidential aspirant of the NPP, could not sit in the comfort of his home at Nima, in Accra and receive party faithful and boast that the NPP would win 85 per cent of the Ashanti votes but refute their agenda to sweep their targeted one million votes, representing 32 per cent.
Describing the comment by Nana Addo as amusing, the governing NDC in a statement issued on the same day of the opposition leader’s comment and signed by it Regional Youth Organizer, Brogya Genfi, said “Nana Akufo-Addo must be day dreaming to have made such a wishful pronouncement”.
The statement recalled that even at a time when ex-president John Agyekum Kufuor, the most successful presidential candidate of the party in recent past and an indigene, could not gunner such votes during his tenure, how much more Nana Addo, who has terrible record of dwindling votes over the period?
“It is important to state that even President John Agyekum Kufour (The most successful Leader of the Busia/Dankwa tradition) who is an indigene of Ashanti and as a sitting President could not get as much as 85% of valid votes cast in Ashanti Region in any election; never in his life! Talk less of Nana Akufo-Addo whose roots is from the Eastern Region and has no track record when it comes to Ashanti politics”, the statement said.
Last Wednesday, April 8, 2015., NPP women numbering 200 from the Subin Constituency comprising polling station executives and other members, called on him at his Nima Residence led by their Member of Parliament (MP), Isaac Osei.
The NDC has also served notice it will divide the Eastern Regional votes with it arch rival, the NPP, even though it is a known fact that Nana Akufo Addo comes from that region.
The NDC according to their communicators are basing their chances on the many development projects executed by President John Dramani Mahama in the almost five years that he has been in power.
The party has for some time been winning six out of the ten regions, where as the NPP under the leadership of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, has been winning two regions being Eastern and Ashanti Regions. And so the party feels that next year’s election, will not be different from what has happened in the past.
“For the records, Nana Akufo-Addo remains the worst performing Opposition leader ever under the 4th Republic. His electoral record indicates a declining trend of all Presidential elections that he has taken part and 2016 will not be an exception.
The NDC has grown from strength to strength in Ashanti Region since 1992.
The era of wicked stigmatization against the NDC is OVER!! In fact, the average Youth from Ashanti prefers and would easily join the NDC compared to NPP. The NDC youth in Ashanti remains resolute to lead the battle and with the determination of the General Party, operation 1 million votes in Ashanti in 2016 election will be a reality.
Our hard work coupled with the massive development by His Excellency President John Mahama in Ashanti, we shall get the 1 million votes or more in 2016- Insha Allah”, the statement concluded.
Even though the governing party is not able to win the above-mentioned two regions, it has always managed to win considerable number of the valid votes cast.
Meanwhile, pollster and Editor-In-Chief of the Daily Dispatch Newspaper, Ben Ephson, has said the wish by the two main political parties as far as votes in the Ashanti Region are concerned is not feasible and so has asked them to lower their expectations.
