For Linking Otumfuo To Cocaine
By Cecil Mensah
Members of the Ashanti Youth Association (AYA), have vowed to protect the Asante kingdom and had taken a swipe at the self-styled Ghanaian billionaire and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central Constituency in the Central Region, Kennedy Agyapong.
They are angry at Kennedy Agyepong for attempting to link the paramount Chief of Asanteman to cocaine in the matter of Nayele Ametefeh, alias Ruby Appiah, alias Ruby Adu-Gyemfi, alias Angel, a self-confessed narcotic drug dealer.
According to AYA, “We have closely watched the MP’s endless and groundless attempt to exploit, undermine and malign Asantes and for that matter Otumfuo Osei Tutu II”.
They warned, ‘’If people are blinded by politics to the extent of hating our king, they must come to realize that Otumfuo, the Asantehene, is the embodiment of our glory and respect around the world as people”.
Speaking at a press conference in Kumasi last Wednesday, the Association mince no words in reiterating their reverence for the Asantehene, their love for humility and peace, but said their trademark of hospitality is gradually being mistaken for softness and naivety.
Barimah Tweneboa Kodua, Secretary of AYA, Nana Boadi Joseph, the Director of Operations and Nana Yaw Brenya, the President of AYA, condemned the intemperate language of the MP.
According to them, the mindset of the Ghanaian politician on the Asante people, has become a deadly trap to themselves, but they have just little time to reverse and reform their perception of Asantes.
“The Asante Kingdom has existed in glory for ages, and we will never compromise or sacrifice this identity and heritage for the interest of politicians and the likes of Mr Agyapong who would seek to malign the Asante Kingdom but goes his home to pay homage to their Chiefs’’ the group posited
The group, revealed that what has broken their long and painful silence, was the unguarded comments made by the MP, who also claim to be a financier to the NPP presidential candidate, Nana Akuffo Addo on November 25,2014 on Adom TV programme, a subsidiary Multi Media Broadcasting Company.
They quoted Kennedy Agyapong as disrespectfully saying, “if advisers of Otumfou fail to advise him I will say it, he has lost respect of his people, because of his association with President Mahama and his brother, Ibrahim Mahama”.
AYA questioned the NPP MP on the kind of barometer he used in measuring the declined in respect of His Royal Majesty, Otumfou Osei Tutu II, adding “….or is it the usual divide and rule tactics in which he sort to incite the subjects (Asantes), against their king because of political expediency”?.
AYA, therefore calls on the hierarchy of the opposition NPP and his colleagues MPs from the Ashanti Region to bring him to order or “we take it as an endorsement from the party”, the group threatened.
“We wish to remind all politicians and everybody that Asanteman existed long before colonialism, long before independence, long before party politics, long before NDC and NPP.
“…so the Asanteman, which has hosted many more from all corners of Ghana and the world over. Has been known for maintaining peace and harmony for ages and as such earned the respect and sincere admiration of the world, will not be left in the manipulative hands of selfish and shameless politicians like Kennedy Agyapong”, it said.
It served notice that “We are much awake and we will confront any such growing immaturity with equal measure in future the group vowed”.
