The standoff at the University of Education Winneba (UEW), which had led to the closure of the school, is a reminder that, the events of yesterday means nothing to us.
It is said that, anybody who forgets his history is bound to repeat the mistakes of yesterday.
Ghana is at a standstill, because anytime we take a step forward, we take two steps backwards. The only country on the surface of the earth that, the aphorism “If you want to know the true character of a man, give him power” is very much alive is Ghana.
In July 2017, Prof. Mawutor Avoke, was asked to step aside until a case brought against him and the University’s Governing Council was determined.
A case was brought before the court by one Supi Kofi Kwayera, who insisted that the Vice Chancellor and the Finance Officer, were operating under the institution’s defunct governing council.
The plaintiff argued that the University’s Council’s mandate had expired in November 2013, but the Education Ministry, failed to constitute a new Governing Council for the university and rather allowed the defunct Governing Council which had no mandate whatsoever to continue in the functions of a properly constituted Governing Council.
Supi Kofi Kwayera, also alleged financial and procurement irregularities on the part of Prof Avoke.
After the back and forth, including the Supreme Court determining the case, on Monday September 17, 2018, president Akufo-Addo, who have always supported illegality since he was sworn into office, attended the investiture and induction of Rev Fr. Professor Anthony Afful-Broni, as the fourth Vice-Chancellor of the University.
Less than one year after the charade, we are back to where we started in 2017, except this time around, the situation has escalated, leading the closure of the school.
Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni, is being accused of the same crimes that led to the sacking of his predecessor.
Worse is the sacking of at least 30 teaching and non-teaching staff have been sacked since Prof. Afful-Broni took over.
This is not only unfortunate but also says a lot about the mentality of the people, we put in charge to run our institutions.
Actions like these, in our opinion, no doubt further lead to the continuous slide of the nation’s education standard into grimmer decline.
We are minded to remind authourities to as a matter of urgency find a lasting solution to the impasse so as to restore normalcy to the school.
