Former President, John Agyekum Kufuor has made it clear that, Anointing Oil, Churches, Imams and Shrines cannot treat cancers, and flatly debunked that breast cancer was a disease which is caused by witches and wizards.
He said even though some people have faith in receiving healing at prayer camps and other religious gatherings, adding “We are now in the Scientific Age, God gave knowledge to Doctors to detect and administer medications to heal diseases.
Mr Kufuor, was addressing more than 35,000 participants, including survivors of breast cancer, security perssonel, students, market women, Queenmothers, keepfit clubs and disabled, who converged at the Jubilee Park in Sunyani, capital of Brong Ahafo Region last Saturday, October 25, 2014, to mark BCI GHANA WALK FOR THE CURE, 2014.
The programme, which is held annually was geared towards creating awareness and also educating the public about the deadly effects of breast cancer.
This year’s event is on the Theme, “Let’s Join In The Fight, We Are Stronger Together”.
The crowd, led by Dr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Wiafe Addai and Mr. Eric Opoku, Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, had earlier on, walked from the residency through the principal streets of Sunyani and later converged at the Jubilee Park.
Mr. Kufuor said, the best way to deal with breast cancer, as early detection and prompt action, adding”Report your breast ailments to qualified professionals at the hospitals.
The ex-President lamented over pictures which show how some women have suffered or even lost their lives because of deadly breast cancer disease.
He also cautioned men to refrain from divorcing or running away from their wives after they have been diagnosed for having breast cancer, nothing that victims of the disease need the support of all to survive.
The Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, who represented the President, John Dramani Mahama, in this year’s event, tasked the media, especially the radio stations to use at least 3 minutes airtime in their medium to educate the public about the deadly nature of breast cancer to save more lives.
He was very happy that, the 2014 BCI Ghana Walk for the Cure event was held in the Brong Ahafo Region, which had high reported cases of breast cancer.
Mr Eric Opoku disclosed that government had purchased an Ultra modern breast cancer screening machine at Sunyani Government Hospital.
He, therefore, appealed to the women to make good use or the machine by going for breast screening.
Dr.(Mrs.) Beatrice Wiafe Addai, the Founder and President of Breast Care International(BCI)Ghana, an NGO.and Chair BCI Ghana Walk For The Cure,2014,announced that in every 69 seconds woman dies of breast cancer, and the best way to deal with the disease is early detection and prompt action.
Dr.Beatrice Wiafe, who is also a General Surgeon and Consultant Breast Surgeon, is the Chief Executive Officer(CEO)of Peace and Love Hospitals in Accra and Kumasi, lamented that misconception and late reports of the disease especially breast cancer to hospitals, were the major banes in the fight against the disease.
She commended the Sponsors for their imminent contribution for successful event so far.
Former First Lady, Theresa Kufuor, whose birth day falls on the day of the event, admonished breast cancer victims not to be shy of the disease saying that early detection and speedy action were the right ways to handle the disease.
Nana Pinampim Kabrese, the Yejihene, and President of Brong Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, pleged the support of traditional leaders to help battle breast cancer in the country.
