The rank and file of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Friday October 31, thronged the Greater Accra Regional office to throw their support for the candidature of the two aspiring candidates, vying for the Greater Accra Regional (GAR) chairmanship slot of the party.
Several party supporters flooded the Kanda Highway regional office of the party, when the two aspiring candidates, Mr Daniel Amartey- Mensah, former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ledzokuku -Krowor Municipal Assembly (LEKMA) in the GAR and Steven Akwetey, also a former board member of Accra Hearts of Oaks Football Club and a former NDC Constituency chairman for Krowor Constituency, went to file their nominations to contest and lead the party into the 2016 general elections.
The two aspiring candidates, took their turn to present their nominations forms to the party’s regional executives present at the in Accra.
So far, Mr Manly Ekow Spain, failed Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) President and Mr Jonathan Nii Tackie-Commey, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodiodio Constituency, have all filed their nominations to wrestle the chairmanship seat from Mr Joseph Arde-Coker, the current regional chairman.
Speaking to the media, Mr Akwetey called on all aspirants to conduct a civil campaign, devoid of mudslinging.
According to him, this is a family affair and that family people do not fight among themselves and urged the aspirants to direct their anger towards the common enemy, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Now that the party’s national officers, have blown the whistle for campaigning to start, he took the opportunity to urge his supporters and members of his campaign team to be civil in their utterances.
He said, the enemy was not from within, but from outside and all arsenals must be directed at them to enable the party secure a second term for President John Dramani Mahama.
He said, the region under his leadership will secure a massive second term for the President and ensure the ‘Better Ghana Agenda’ was further advanced to meet the demands and aspirations of Ghanaians.
He told the reporters gathered that his intension to vie for the regional chairmanship position, ‘is not a do and die affair and he will support any candidate who wins for the good of the NDC and the vast majority of the party supporters”.
On his part, Mr Amartey Mensah, said his decision to join the race stem from the vast experience he had acquired at the grass root levels of the party.
According to him, he rose through the ranks of the party to be become a Constituency Treasurer, later became an Assemblyman for the electoral.
He gave the assurance that under his leadership, the party would wrestle all the two Ayawaso seats from the opposition NPP in the region.
He stressed that the party under his leadership, would take back the Ayawaso Central Constituency and Ayawaso West Wuogon that have been in the grips of the NPP over the years.
