The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Dr. Alfred OkoeVanderpuije has hinted of a revocation of the contract of Maxwell Waste Management Company Limited for non-performance.

The waste management company has over the years failed to deliver as part of the contract it signed with the Assembly to rid the Odododiodiooo Constituency of filth in the Greater Accra Region expressed grave worry about the unhygienic environmental conditions at the London Market in the Odododiodio Constituency of the Greater Accra Region.

The Mayor gave this hint when he paid a working visit to the London Market in the above mentioned Constituency as part of the celebration of birthday and surprisingly discovered that the lives of residents and traders are in great danger as a result of the serious stench that emanates from the chocked gutters in the area.

This situation, residents lamented, was as a result of the attitude of some unscrupulous residents at Bukom, Akoto Lante, Gbese and Salaga who have converted the gutters into their dump sites, a situation which according to them, if stringent measures are not taken to stop it, it will degenerate into serious communicable diseases particularly cholera.

The Mayor who was very passionate about the health of the residents called for periodic clean up exercise to clear the chocked gutters in the community.

Dr. Vanderpuije blamed the Director of the Environmental Health Directorate of the AMA Dr. Simpson Anim Boateng for not doing due diligence his ability to put administrative measures to ensure effective monitoring of waste disposal in the Accra Metropolis.

In an interview with some of the angery residents, they blamed the Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodio Constituency Hon. Nii LanteVanderpuije for not providing lasting solutions sanitation in the area.

According to them, they have approached the MP on several occasions to give them designated dumpsites but all appeals have fell on deaf ears.
However, when journalists reached the MPs’s Special Assistant NiiTackie over the concern raised by the residents, he denied, saying that last week the MP had organized a clean-up exercise to clean the gutters.

He pointed out that the situation should not be blamed on stakeholders in the area but residents at Bukom, AkotoLante, Gbese and Salaga market all within the Ga Mashie areas, who on constantly dump refuse in the gutters.

As part of his birthday celebration, the Greater Accra Markets Women Association have presented assorted items to the Mayor.
