The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has warned that the Assembly will execute it mandate as stipulated by the laws of the land, warning it will crash any groups or individuals that dare to obstruct its mandate.

According to Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpujie, irrespective of an ongoing court action at the Fast Track High Court, he intends to lead the AMA to demolish a plush Dansoman suburb called Akokorfoto, because he had been directed to do so to maintain law and order in the city of Accra.

“We, therefore take this opportunity to advise the general public, within the Metropolis, that while executing the agenda of the Assembly as mandated by Law, any individual or group of individuals, who do anything to obstruct the performance of those statutory duties would be dealt with according to Law”, the statement said.

Dr. Vanderpujie, served the notice in a press statement in reaction to concerns raised by the Sempe Stool in Accra that the AMA boss was planning to use the state machinery as ruse to achieve his own self interest. He warned that the AMA would carry out its statutory mandate without fear or favour.

“The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), would like to reiterate that it has a statutory obligation to maintain law and order around the built city and we would do so without fear or favour of any individual or organization”, he said.

The AMA boss, explained that his outfit has been served an Order of Mandamus from the High Court to demolish the said buildings at Akokorfoto, and since they do not want to be in contempt of court, they have invited the Police to give them protection to execute that mandate.

“For the benefit of the reading public, we wish to set the records straight as follows: Mandamus is an order of a High Court which compels an individual or institution to perform a statutory duty as required of him. Failure to act in accordance with the order would constitute contempt of that Court.

This explains why Accra Metropolitan Assembly (A.M.A), was under obligation to enforce the said Court Order by inviting the police to provide security to the demolition team, which exercise is yet to be carried out”, he said.

The Sempe Stool, had accused the AMA and the Gbawe Kwartei Family, of collaborating to demolish a well demarcated residential and commercial area at Akokorfoto.

The two, have described the location of the plush buildings as a “slum” and will soon storm the area with police officers to demolish all the buildings.

Already, different parties with interest on the land have filed about four writs at various courts pending determination. It, therefore, surprises the Stool that the AMA, will meddle in cases which are pending in court thus bringing upon himself criminal contempt.

According to the Sempe Stool, the Gbewa Kwartei Family despite being party to the many cases in court on the same land, went to a separate division of the High Court without the knowledge of the various interested parties, and obtained an Order of Mandamus, compelling the AMA to demolish the properties.

The Sempe Stool, has threatened it would file contempt charges against the AMA and Dr. Vanderpujie for doing the bidding of the Gbawe Kwartei Family, as well as a company called Alpha Beta Company.

The Chief Justice, Mrs. Georgina Theodora Wood, has been called upon to intervene in the matter to prevent the AMA and the Gbabe Kwatei Family from carrying out the exercise.
