The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will soon open nomination for primaries in constituencies occupied currently by Members of Parliament (MP) on the ticket of the party, after it successfully held primaries in orphan constituencies last month.
However, it appears a fair playing grounds would not be created for all candidates as President Akufo-Addo, has been caught in bed with one of the parliamentary hopeful in the New Juaben Constituency contest in the Eastern Region.
The Herald is learning that, there is a grand agenda to oust the incumbent Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah from Parliament by no less a person than the President, who while on a tour in the Constituency, wined and dined with the Executive Secretary of the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA) Michael Okyere Baafi; a parliamentary hopeful.
The New Juaben Constituency seat, is clearly under siege by Michael Okyere Baafi, whose outfit is under the office of President.
Dr. Assibey-Yeboah, who is the Chairman of the Finance Committee of Parliament, is said to be not in the good books of the President and so a very clever plan is being hatched by the President and the Presidency to remove him in the impending primaries. Indeed, his dislikes for the MP, led to him sidelining him for appointment.
Another seat, said to be going for another candidate of the President is the Bantama seat in the Ashanti Regionby a deputy chief of staff, Francis Asenso Boakye currently occupied by Okyem Aboagye popularly known as “Am I chop chop”.
Though records show that the two know each other, and many may conclude that this contest would not be anything new, Mr Okyere Baafi, this time may have the upper hand, as his campaign appears to have been boosted with the backing of the President.
Mr. Okyere Baafi, will be trying his luck for the second time, when the NPP opens nomination for the primaries, having contested the incumbent MP in 2015.
But information reaching The Herald indicates that, the President is strongly behind the parliamentary hopeful and he is doing everything possible within his power, to unseat the incumbent.
During his tour of his home region over the weekend, President Akufo-Addo, was accompanied by Mr Okyere Baafi, when he toured the Constituency; a task which if in ordinary times, would have been the preserve of Dr Assibey Yeboah.
Pictures and statement issued by a group supporting Mr Okyere Baafi’s candidature, reveal the President ended his tour of the area with lunch with delegates and party’s bigwigs from the region in the home of the Freezones boss.
The statement from “Friends of Michael Okyere Baafi” captured all that happened in his home in the Constituency.
The group in the statement, was grateful to the President for playing guest to the parliamentary hopeful and having lunch with party delegates in his residence.
