Without Afoko, Agyapong & Others; Questions Of Accountability Pop-Up
The 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is embarking on a 16-day tour of some countries in Europe, ostensibly to look for cash to run his campaign, but without his party’s chiefs especially, the National Chairman, Paul Afoko and General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.
The tour will see him visit five countries namely, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy, where he is scheduled to meet members of the NPP branches.
He is also billed to undergo his routine medical examination in France, where he visited a couple of times during his 6 months stay in London.
But insiders have told The Herald that Nana Addo’s decision to snub the national leaders is just an affirmation of his deep-seated disgust for the two leaders of the
party. Indeed, Nana Addo, wanted to have the NPP First Vice-Chairman, Freddie Blay on the trip, but was advised against it.
It was revealed to this paper that the NPP National Chairman and General Secretary, were not officially informed of the flagbearer’s trip, but that they only heard of the news through a press statement issued by Eugene Arhin, his Press Secretary over the weekend.
Many are, however, questioning what image Nana Addo wants to portray of the NPP abroad, saying his decision to meet the party heads in the Diaspora without the National executives, smacks of his bad leadership skills. To them having Mr. Afoko and Mr. Agyapong, would have given a positive image of the party that the NPP was indeed united to wrestle power from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
It was argued that as things stand now, financial support from the supporters abroad, could be less, since the party is not united.
Another big question most people are asking is, whether he would properly account for financial contributions which will come to the party from the members abroad through him.
The press statement had said in Germany, the first country of the tour, Nana Addo, will attend functions organised by the party’s branch in Dusseldorf, as well as travel to Berlin for events organised by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, the development foundation associated with the German governing CDU party, a sister party of the NPP.
Whilst in the Netherlands, Nana Akufo-Addo, will pay a working visit to the Regional Education Centre in Amsterdam, where he will see at first hand the operations of the Dutch technical and vocational school system, and also address NPP townhall meetings.
In Belgium, he will deliver the commencement address at the graduation ceremony of the prestigious Centre Européen de Recherches Internationales et Stratégiques (CERIS) on “Ghana: Present Challenges and Future prospects”.
In France, Nana Akufo-Addo, will pay a site visit to KUHN group, one of the world’s leading suppliers of specialised agricultural machinery, meet Ghanaian students and executives of NPP, before departing to his final destination of the tour, Italy, where he will take part in Parma, from May 28 to May 31, in the NPP’s quadrennial International Conference, which brings together all NPP overseas branches to deliberate on the future of the Party.
He will be accompanied on the trip by Francis Asenso-Boakye, his Political Assistant, Eugene Arhin, Press Secretary and Charles Owiredu, the Director of International Relations of the NPP. Nana Akufo-Addo, and his team will return to Ghana on Monday, June 1, 2015.
About three weeks ago, The Herald reported that three times presidential candidate of the opposition NPP, was going to storm Chancellor Angela Merkel’s country, Germany, ostensibly to beg for some cash to support his 2016 election campaign.
A copy of the programme issued by the party in Germany copied to some media houses in Ghana, announced the date of the programme as Saturday, May 16, 2015 at the Eller Str. 40227 D’sseldorf, Germany. One Kweku Appiah, made the announcement in a statement he signed.
Another document accompanying the programme, sighted by this paper is captioned “Invitation To A Meet-And-Greet Party in Honour of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo”.
According to the invite, Nana Addo will be in that country from May 16 -19, 2015 and anyone who makes the effort to feature at the programme, will be offered the opportunity to greet the two times failed presidential aspirant.
It read; “as you are already informed about, the Flag bearer of the NPP, Ghana for the 2016 general elections Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo will be visiting Germany from May 16-19, 2015”.
“A number of activities have been planned by the NPP Germany Branch during this period. It is with pleasure to cordially invite you and members of your association to attend a Party in honour of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo”, the statement said.
The organizers advised anybody interested to sit on the “High Table” with Nana Addo and his delegation from Ghana to contact 0049 (0)176-21845702 or e-mail email@example.com for a seat to be reserved for that person.
“High Table seats with Nana and his delegation can be reserved by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 0049 (0)176-21845702. Please use the above contacts for any other information”, the statement urged interested party members.
Meanwhile, according to The Herald’s information, reserving a seat for any individual or a group of people on the high table with the 71-year old, will come at a cost. But, the party executives argue it is a privileged to sit next to their party leader, especially so when they are organizing the programme to raise funds.
Indeed, the statement said funds raised from 20:00 dinner, will be sent to the party in Ghana to support Nana Addo’s third time attempt at the presidency.
“All proceeds from the event will go direct to support the NPP Ghana campaign for the 2016 general elections. Thank you for all your help and support”, the statement concluded.
He is expected to take advantage of the platform to as usual, to launch scathing attack on the John Mahama government and the Electoral Commission and its outgoing chairman, Dr. Kwadow Afari Gyan.
