-Dr Apraku Insists, Boakye Agyarko To Follow Suit
Ex-Trade and Industry, Regional Cooperation and NEPAD Minister in John Kufuor administration, has sunk teeth into Nana Akufo-Addo’s flesh again, saying although the twice defeated presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), may be popular in his party, he cannot attract independent Ghanaian voters to become president.
Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, contested strongly, suggestions by outgoing party executives and political pundits that Nana Addo is the most marketed candidate and so should be tried for the third time, because he might be lucky to win the 2016 Presidential Election.
The ex-Member of Parliament (MP) for Offinso South in the Ashanti Region, who coincidentally served Nana Addo as his 2008 Campaign Director and also played major roles in his 2012 Presidential Campaign, is the second prominent personality to have come out with suggestion that Nana Addo ought to be changed for the betterment of the party.
Dr. Kobina Arthur Kennedy, who was Nana Addo’s Director of Communication in 2008, also passed a damning verdict on him in his famous book “Chasing The Elephant Into The Bush; The Politics of Complacency,” in which he also suggested that the Presidential candidate was not good for the NPP, because among other things, he has surrounded himself with family and friends, some of whom had questionable characters.
Meanwhile, The Herald is informed that Nana Addo’s Election 2012 Campaign Manager, Boakye Agyarko, is also lacing his boots to make a statement on the unsuitability of Nana Addo, as Presidential Candidate for the 2016 Presidential elections.
Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, an Agricultural Economist, who is so far talking about the undesirability of Nana Addo, said, arguments that he might be lucky on the third attempt as NPP Presidential candidate is infantile in a democratic party.
“This is a democratic party, everything is wrong for anybody to say that somebody is marketed, marketed by whom, whose standard? What is the basis for the assessment of that marketing? “The measure of your success is how much you sell of that product”, Dr Apraku told Joy news.
Using President John Mahama’s success story in the last elections, Dr. Apraku said, Mr. Mahama had never contested presidential election, but came into the contest very late and with less than five months; he was able to win power for the first time.
“John Mahama, he has never run any presidential election in his life, he came for four five months, yet he was able to win and you are talking about what”?
It will be recalled that following the completion of the infamous presidential petition at the Supreme Court months ago, members of the party, especially executives including its current General Secretary, John Owusu Afriyie (Sir John) stated publicly that its 2012 presidential flagbearer, will represent the party in 2016 even if he is in a wheelchair.
In a separate radio interviews in Accra, yesterday, on claims that he had attacked Nana Addo in an address at Kumasi during a gathering of NPP members drawn from various tertiary institutions, Dr. Apraku rebuffed the accusation, noting that he never did that but only candidly stated the plan the party needed to hatch going forward into 2016.
According to the former director of campaign and head of security and intelligence for both 2008 and 2012 in the NPP campaign, a party that has suffered two straight defeats in the hands of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), needed to focus on a leader who can win power as president not a mere flagbearer for the party.
“We need people who can vote for us and make somebody president in our party. All that I am saying is that a party such as ours that has lost two successive elections must explore all the possibilities. We should also select a presidential candidate who will have the capacity to attract independent voters to vote for us, he explained”.
He told host of Adom FM’s ‘Dwaso Nsem’ Kofi Adomah, that even though he had supported Nana Addo in previous elections and could not be described as a traitor, adding that he did not join the NPP because of Mr. Akufo-Addo.
He said, the 2012 flagbearer had been aware of his political ambition when he contested in 1998 at Sunyani, where he AkufoAddo placed second and he came third.
He pointed out that he never mentioned anywhere after the 2007 primary that after he appointed him as campaign manager, he will never contest for flagbearer again.
According to Dr. Apraku, his determination to ensure that Nana Addo won the two lost elections was not in doubt, as far back as 2010, he decided to forgo his ambition to contest in the party’s primary, just because he wanted Nana Addo to win the primary so that he supports him in the general election to win power.
He said, the work he executed in the 2012 election was there for everyone to see as the election was described as the most peaceful election in the country, noting no violence whatsoever was recorded to have dented his job as head of security and intelligence.
“The job I executed as security chief is there for every Ghanaian to see. This was the most peaceful election we have ever had in Ghana.
We did our work, we did not beat anybody, we did not steal ballot box we did not fight”, adding that if the Committee in charge of selecting polling agents failed to select the most intelligent people to represent the party, where did he go wrong?
He was particularly not happy about the party’s communicators in the media, who have been attacking him over his observation.
He said, if such people have surrounded and are advising Nana Addo, Ghanaians would not be comfortable with them.
