Over Her Disrespect and Insults
By Cecil Mensah
Constituency executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Ablekuma West in the Greater Accra Region, are accusing their Member of Parliament (MP), Ursula Gifty Owusu of tearing the party apart.
She is not on talking terms with most of the party leaders in the Constituency, especially its Chairman, Mr. Theophilus N.A Tetteh.
Last Saturday October 5, 2013. The Constituency executives organized a float, where they donated some assorted items to the Dansoman Polyclinic and launched the NPP Ladies Club at a colourful ceremony at the Dansoman Keep fit Club, the MP failed to attend.
The Herald’s interaction with some of the Constituency executives, revealed that should discussions ongoing within the NPP that its MPs must go unopposed, Madam Ursula Owusu in particular, will have another NPP member contesting her as an independent Parliamentary Candidate.
The Constituency executives, described her as very arrogant and a pompous woman, who since becoming an MP, has killed party unity and family spirit, which existed among the rank and file of the NPP.
So bad is the relationship that the MP has stop attending all party activities organized by Mr Tetteh.
The Herald has learnt that they have been simmering tensions among the Ablekuma West Constituency executives, party elders and financiers on one hand, and Ursula on the other hand, over her total disrespect for them, since her assumption of power as the MP.
According to party insiders, the relationship between the party members and their MP has badly deteriorated with some members even contemplating organizing a press conference to reveal the status of the party, but were held back by Election Petition filed at the Supreme Court.
For instance, Ursula, is said to have gone to the Regional office saying, she cannot work with the Constituency executives, claiming they are illiterates and “poultry farmers”.
The MP is also said to have made some derogatory remarks about the Chairman and others who assisted her to win the newly-created Ablekuma West Constituency seat.
She is said to have called the Chairman, as a mere, poultry farmer who does not know his left from right.
Ahead of last Saturday colourful ceremony at the Dansoman Keep fit Club, the MP was heard on radio denying knowledge of the programme and insisted that the regional executives have not sanctioned any programme.
She specifically mentioned, the Regional Women’s Organizer as not aware of the launch of any NPP Ladies Club in the Constituency, and asked people to stay away from the event.
When he was confronted on the frosty relationship between him and the MP, Mr. Tetteh alias “Chairman One” told The Herald that the party is bigger than any one individual.
He advised that it is about time arrogance and ego is thrown away in the interest of the party.
Mr. Tetteh said, he was not ready to go on radio to wash the party’s dirty linen in public for the vultures in the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to feed on.
He said the relationship between him and the MP has always been cordial and quoted ex-President John Agyekum Kufour saying that “you need not be friends with somebody to be able to work with him or her” adding, the interest of the party is more paramount than the parochial interest of one individual.
Mr. Tetteh, stressed that he would not sit down for any individual to run the affairs of the party on radio.
The Chairman explained that what is needed is for all party supporters to devote their time and efforts to working to wrestle power from the NDC.
He said the Constituency would not wait for any directive from the national leaders of the party to kick start the processes to send the NDC
into opposition come, 2016.
