After many years of battle against breast cancer and public education on curbing it, it still stands that some women have no idea into the basic things to do to examine any signs of breast cancer.

Breast self-examination is an easier means of closely checking the breast to inspect for any disorder in the breast.

Even though Breast self-examination is less costly, many women fall prey to late detection of breast cancer due to neglect and get caught in the web of paying huge sums of money to treat the breast cancer.

It is indeed sad and disheartening. This is therefore the time for all hands to come on deck in publicizing this breast examination campaign.Women should not wait untilbreast cancerawareness month in October before examining your breast. It should be a regularthing among women

For those who are new to the breast self- examination the World Health Organization requires one to;

Lie down and put your left arm under your head use your right arm to examine your left breast. With your three middle fingers flat move gently in small circular motion over the entire breast. Checking for any lump, hard knot, or thickening.

Use different level of pressure- light, medium, and firm –over each area of your breast. Check the whole breast from your collar bone above your breast down to the ribs below your breast. Switch arms and repeat the other breast.

Look at your breasts while standing in front of a mirror with your hands on your hips look for lumps. New difference in size and shape and swelling on dimpling of the skin.

Raise one arm then the other so you can check the arms for lumps. Squeeze the nipples of each breast gently between your thumb and index finger. Report to your health care provider right away. Any discharge of fluid from the nipples or any lumps or changes in your breast.

The Maurer foundation has indicated that most women who have lump in their breast doesn’t necessary mean they have breast cancer thus the need for further evaluation by a doctor.
