10 People lost their lives to fire in 2016 – B/A Regional fire commander

The Brong Ahafo regional fire service today held its 2016 end of year review of the command of command of the Ghana National fire service in sunyani of which it was revealed that about ten people lost their lives to fire.

ASP James Owusu Agyei, the Brong Ahafo regional fire officer noted that over 145 others sustained various degrees of life threatening injuries.

This was disclosed to the section of media by the Brong Ahafo regional fire commander Assiatant fire Officer (ASP) James Owusu Agyei at a year review Press conference organized by the regional fire command in sunyani today.

In consonance with international best practices of having fire stations within a maximum of ten minutes travelling distance, the command with assistance of the sunyani west district assembly was able to create Nsuatre fire station.

Again with the help of Newmont and the Asutifi South District Assembly, another fire station was constructed at Kenyase with another one under construction at Kukuom.

He said in 2016, the command initiated discussions with Techiman North, Kintampo South, Dormaa East and Sene West district for the creation new fire stations in their respective districts.

It is the hope of the command that when these stations are constructed, the response time of the service will improve considerably.

ASP Owusu Agyei indicated that operationally, there were 644 fire outbreaks in 2016 as against 633 incidences in 2015 representing an increase of 17.73 percent rise.

According to the officer, 36.3 percent were bush fires, 35.5 percent were domestic fires, 12. 3 percent vehicular and 5.1 percent were commercial fires.

The command, per the assistant fire officer was able to attend to about 63 road traffic accidents out of the lots due principally to logistically constrain.

On the other hand, the officer reveals that the command is faced with challenges which includes rapid response vehicles such as picksup, and motor bikes for fire education.

In the light of these, he appealed to the non profitable organisations and philanthropists or individuals to come to the aid of the command to provide worlds class services with the right logistics.
