Operators of Mobile Telecommunications Networks (MTN), one of the leading mobile telecommunication operators in the country, has said that there are over million smart phone users on its network.
The company says, the number of smart phones users with access to data on the network has increased from 525 in November 2011 to 1.7 million in June 2014.
According to the company, this is due to the results of the strategic partnership with Original Equipment Manufacturers, such as Tecno, Huawei and Nokia, which have developed highly affordable smart, android enabled phones for its subscribers, who cannot afford high end devices.
This came to light at the launch of Internet Festival, dubbed iFest in Accra last week.
Speaking at the launch, Mr Serame Taukobong, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN said, the company has seen positive results, since the
activation of the iFest campaign last year.
He said, this has contributed to the record five thousand new data subscriptions through the campaign.
He noted that data services, have contributed 17.4 percent of total revenue for the MTN Ghana office for the first half of 2014.
He averred that MTN currently leads Ghana’s data market with 50 to 54 percent of the data market share.
The trend of growth of internet usage in the country is not too different from what is happening globally, disclosing that Ghana now places 145 in the global internet rankings with 12.3 percent internet penetration he said according to Global Internet Society’s rankings.
“Projections done by industry researchers on mobile data traffic forecast exponential growth in the next few years especially with the increase of smart devices on the market requires mobile operators to increase the capacity of the network with enhanced technology to be able to meet the demand”.
